About
Situated 8km from Cork City, this historic castle is most famous for its stone, which has the traditional power of conferring eloquence on all who kiss it. The word Blarney was introduced into the English language by Queen Elizabeth I and is described as pleasant talk, intended to deceive without offending. The stone is set in the wall below the battlements, and to kiss it one has to lean backwards (grasping an iron railing) from the parapet walk. LAST ADMISSION IS 60 MINS BEFORE CLOSING TIME/Dogs Not Permitted/Drone Photography Prohibited

- Karen MEdmonton, Canada39 contributionsGardens beyond beautiful!Paddy wagon tours got us there just as the castle opened. We went straight for the castle and climbed the very narrow stairs. My hubby almost kissed the stone he got dizzy! I didn’t try. The castle was awesome. Because we got there early we had lots of time for the gardens. Thank goodness because they are magnificent! Lots of different areas, a cave, a carnivorous garden, a poisonous garden, arboretum, Irish garden. With art installations throughout. Absolutely outstanding! And beautiful! Skip the castle if the lineup is long. Don’t miss the gardens!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- Gail VEverett, Washington370 contributionsnot enough time to explore everythinggreat tower climb. lines may be long but climb is slow and very managable. The views from the tower are wonderful. The gardens are beautiful. there are several different ones to visit on the grounds. great riverside walk. the rock close was a wonderful area to seeVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 16, 2023
- Lord MJersey, United Kingdom296 contributionsGood fun and don’t forget the gardensThe weather was rubbish and so there weren’t many visitors. We parked up and then shot off to the castle as we had heard the queues could be legendary. Indeed there are signs up saying how long the expected wait is at various points. Including one for 3 hours! Fortunately we walked straight past that one and there was no sign of a queue. The castle is a well maintained ruin. We walked up the very narrow spiral staircase, and apart from one couple who were quite slow, had no hold up. We then appeared at the top and had fabulous views over the surrounding countryside and around the rectangular top of the castle. We could see across to where people were preparing to kiss the stone. This involves removing everything from your pockets and person, including your glasses. Then lying down on your back. Reaching out to hold the vertical bars. And then being lifted and shoved out and down. You then kiss the Blarney Stone and get pulled back up. And get helped up. It is all over in a flash and isn’t at all frightening. Then back around the rectangular building and down three levels and out. The number of stairs involved wasn’t too bad and went by in a flash. So we were back outside and went to explore the gardens. We had been told about the Nepalese Garden and the Fern garden and the Poison garden. And they were all lovely and worth a visit. We spent about 75 minutes there due to our schedule. If we had known how lovely the gardens were we would have scheduled in an afternoon instead. We loved it. Incidentally I talk a lot more rubbish than I used to …………..Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- treetrippersFredericton, Canada638 contributionsOnce in lifetimeSo the stairs to kiss the stone not for faint of heart, 140 uneven stone steps in circles, narrow and can be wet. To kiss the stone one must lay on your back and hang upside down. There is a guy there to help you up and down to actually kiss the stone. Kind of scary. They sell the pics, not overly expensive. - Jeff NPhoenix, Arizona122 contributionsKiss the Stone, of courseKiss the Blarney Stone, of course you’re doing this! I hear the line can be long during season, like an hour to two hours long (they have a sign that says “60 minutes from here). I’m pretty sure it’s an uncomfortable wait in the narrow staircase up to the castle top and stone. The castle grounds are phenomenal and so much to do enjoy! Well done! The village of Blarney is great too. Make time to explore the shops.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 30, 2023
- Sandra HThompsonville, Michigan349 contributionsNot Just for Kissing The Stone! This was on our cousin's bucket list to visit for the first time in Ireland. She wanted to kiss the stone. My husband and I have visited a handful of times over the years, and so selfishly I agreed, not because of the castle, but because of the gardens. They alone are worth the cost of admission. My recommendation if you want to reach the top of the castle and beat the crowds is get there right when they open and kiss the stone. Or JUST climb to the top for the amazing views. THEN walk the gardens. Take your time. If I lived nearby I'd be walking them everyday! So don't think of this as a touristy destination. It's the chance to get some fresh air and literally smell the roses.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 2, 2023
- Will PWalla Walla, Washington23 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit. Very picturesqueI really enjoyed the castle and grounds. The climb up to the top of the castle is a bit of a hike. Steep and gets narrower as you go but you have a rope to hang on to. Then at the top you can kiss the Blarney stone and get your picture taken if you want to. Great views from the top.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 6, 2023
- L HChicago, Illinois1,860 contributionsGorgeousThe grounds are absolutely lovely, and the castle’s not bad either😁 An entire day might not be enough to fully explore all the paths, gardens and sights. The castle is impressive, and kissing the stone (which requires lying on your back, hanging your head backwards over the edge) is touristy silliness, but fun! Well worth a long visit, better off-season to avoid crowds; a good place to enjoy fall colors.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten December 8, 2023
- Jason ReillyRobesonia, Pennsylvania236 contributionsImpressive castle and groundsI took a day trip from Dublin to see one of Ireland's most well known sites and it did not disappoint. I climbed the castle stairs and kissed the Blarney stone. Got a bit dizzy standing up after kissing the stone but it was fun. The grounds around the castle were beautiful as well.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten December 22, 2023
- Georgia34 contributionsGood day tripMe and my friend went while visiting Cork, it was a simple bus journey from the centre of Cork so an easy day trip. We spent the majority of the day here just wondering around the gardens and grounds. There was a massive queue for the kissing stone so we didn’t bother with it. Some parts of the grounds felt like it had jumped out of a fairytale with just how magical it felt.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten December 30, 2023

This is worth a visit just to say you saw the Blarney Stone and castle. The grounds are really beautiful and quite a bit of area to see.
BUT, It is very expensive for admission and then on top of an overpriced ticket they charge you again to see the Blarney Stone. Then you can’t take any pictures of you kissing the stone you have to buy theirs. Personally, I thought it was a little bit too much. We did not visit the kissing stone.

We paid €64 for 2 adults and 2 senior citizens, which was expensive, given the experience on offer. The carpark fee was not included. The restaurant staff were surly and there was only one toilet available by the restuarant, where the queue was over 10 people long at one point. This may have been because of Covid, but couldn't some provision not have been made to provide more toilets?
We enjoyed the gardens and the amazing flora.

Was here today with the lovely Ursula and my children and grandchildren.
Wonderful experience having most of my family here but what a place to have it in!
The gardens are breathtaking, huge, meandering pathways with gorgeous plants and trees from all over the world.
There are sculptures galore to be seen and it’s really a smashing place for kids too.
I can’t recommend it highly enough, very reasonable to get in and kids under 8 are free.

I highly recommend a visit to Blarney Castle & Gardens. My partner & I arrived around half 3 which was just enough time for a ramble in the gardens and a climb to the top of the castle. This is likely because of covid as well as being a weekday and we were probably very lucky. No one was ahead of us when in the castle and we were able to have a great chat with the lads working at the Blarney Stone. The weather was a little wet & wild at that point so I didn’t brave a kiss of the Stone this time but my partner did and he is delighted he did. They are fully compliant with covid regulations and a special cleaner is used on the Stone between visitors. We were told at the peak of a summers day pre-covid some people would have waited 3 hours queueing for the Stone. We were very lucky indeed!
You can save 10% off your ticket price if you prebook however there are no time slots and it is first come first serve in that regard. A good-sized car park is located on site, €3 fee when leaving (€100 if you leave late - it closes at 5pm).

Our Family visited on 18 April early morning to avoid the crowds , a wise move. There is a nice big parking area that is accessed going through the boom.
The ticket office opens at 9am & cost is 18 euros pp & though website says if you book online its cheaper we could not find the cheaper tickets.
The gardens are quite big & I would allocate at least 3-4 hrs to be able to see everything. There is a lot more than just the Castle to see. We did the Castle 1st & all kissed the stone to get pics without people & before any q's started.
Next we ventured to the Poison Gardens , the Blarney House , Lake , some rock gardens & The Cave.
The grounds are very well maintained & great views can be enjoyed from the top of the Castle including cows grazing on close by farms.
There is also a nice stream flowing through the site , some lovely flowers including the tulips that were in full bloom all over Ireland. We also enjoyed some coffee on site & a snack .
The hype is usually about the Blarney Stone but this attraction has far more to offer than just the stone & was really an enjoyable morning out

The Blarney Castle is a 'Must Do' destination for Ireland. Built during medieval times it's surrounded by stunning gardens a stream and great natural beauty.
If you wish to kiss the Blarney Stone you must climb a tiny spiral stone staircase to the top of the castle where you will be asked to lie on your back, wriggle your shoulders to the edge of the gap before the outer wall which has a sheer drop to the ground; don't look down its terrifying so you tilt your head back and hopefully your neck will be long enough to enable you to kiss the stone upside down.
I was too short but still managed to touch the stone by extending my arm. Thank heavens there were 2 staff, strong men either side to support the action. The stone is washed each time its touched with gel which is also available for hands during Covid protocols.
The views from the top are superb despite the height of the castle it's safe with hand rails and ropes to cling to if you're feeling frightened.
the castle is austere and empty with the exception of historic details of how each room or space was used.
This attraction is not suitable for disabled travellers or for those afraid of heights.
Make sure you take your camera as there are many beautiful flowers and other items of interest.
There is parking which you must pay for, toilets, 2 gift shops and a coffee shop.

Very expensive entry fee. We ordered a pizza expecting it to be a normal enough size , it was tiny pizza you can buy these pizzas in Aldi for 49cent the cafe charged 4.50 for ONE profit of 4.01 guys robbery! An utter disgrace! No sanitiser by the ticket machine for the car. Ladies toilet- bin was overflowing with used tissues. The gents toilet had a bucket under the urinale and there was "something" in there ill, leave it at that, what's that about? Totally over rated. Would not recommend Blarney Castle.

Admission for seniors was E14.00 This allowed you to enter the grounds and walk around the property to enjoy the amazing gardens such as the Poison Garden and the Fern Garden. There are cafes and a gift shop. Plenty of parking. It also allowed entry to Blarney Castle where you can kiss the Blarney Stone. This sounds like a fun activity, but there are some caveats:
1. The stone is located at the very top of the castle, so that's how far you will have to walk up.
2. The stairway is round and very narrow. The steps are wedge shaped irregular rock. It can be tricky and unstable at times to climb the steps.
3. The railing is a rope which runs vertically, fastened to the wall.
4. It is quite high.
Therefore if you have mobility issues, claustrophobia, or a fear of heights I would pass.
When you get to the top, there are workers who help you, You have to lay on your back, hang your head way back and down then kiss the wall where they point. The had sanitizer that they spray he stone with between guests.

We came here by bus from Cork City. Blarney village itself is worth a visit, especially as the Blarney Woollen Mill is on the main road and well worth a visit. We walked from there to the castle which takes about five minutes. We realised that although we had had misgivings about going to the castle and grounds on a day when rain was forecast, it was a good decision as it was clearly evident from the numbers there, that in good weather you could have a long wait to go into the castle and up the tower. I’m aware that some people are nervous of the climb up the tower to the place of the stone but you can stop on the way at different floors and to be honest at seventy two I managed okay. At the top you have the chance to kiss the famous stone and your picture is taken as you do so and this can be retrieved, for a fee, back at ground level.
Surrounding the castle are extensive grounds which are a delight in themselves. You can navigate around them using the guide you get on entrance. We stopped at the cafe in the former stable block and had a hot drink and some food which was reasonably priced. All in all a very enjoyable experience and hey, I can say I’ve kissed the Blarney Stone, priceless!!

We went for the castle and Blarney Stone experience. But didn't anticipate that the gardens surrounding it were so well-kept, varied and had so much more to explore. Take time to see the cave, house (open early, not late), lake, staircases, ponds and passages through all type of flora. We ended up spending 3-4 hours, so be sure to arrive by 1-2pm as it closes at 5pm, and you must be out by 6 (which if you are in the back could take a long time to get to the gates). This is one of the best, most varied private gardens I have seen in travels throughout the world and was not expected beforehand.
Get your fear worked out and kiss the stone. They had good sanitation practices between every person, and safety was evident. Have a friend ready the camera for a video because it happens quick.
If your car is in the parking past the closing time, there was a large fee after 6pm to release your car. So, finding a spot on a street in the town may be a good bet, although it was limited to 2 hours.

We are going to be driving through Cork, but I don't think we're going to make it in time before they close for the evening. Can we see the castle from the roadway? Can we drive up to it after hours just to take pictures?

Yeh, its not close to where your car would be parked. Since you're driving through Cork, is there no way that you can visit the castle since you're already there? Its a beautiful castle and it would be a shame to miss it if you're going to be in the area anyways.

Hello, I am visiting in June and planned to visit Blarney Castle on June 5th, 2023. I was wondering if there is a specific time when we have to be there, or if we have tickets, we just show up. Also when is the best time in the day to visit?
Written January 13, 2023
I believe you just turn up as when suits, you may have to queue if its busy in order to kiss the stone.

Hi, is there anywhere to store luggages around the castle ? If not, are big backpacks allowed ? We don't plan on going to see the Stone, so won't be blocking the stairs.
Written August 2, 2022
They did not have any visible storage facilities but maybe the check in counter can hold it or the gift shop. I would contact the place before going. Blarney castle is a huge place that you can spend up to 2 hrs just strolling the beautiful grounds. The Blarney Stone is at the top of the castle, approx 100 steps up a narrow stair case. u don’t have to kiss it but you should go through the castle . It was interesting to see and learn a few things about castle living and has plaques all over to tell you what room was what . Not to mention the view was beautiful from the top.
