Interesting to see an open roof trusses, without the usual Gothic starry vaults to be seen on the Continent. The blueish tint to the Kilkenny limestone gives this cathedral an unprecedented atmosphere. A cathedral true to the Gothic genius loci splendour.

This cathedral in Kilkenny is very impressive, inside and out. The stained glass windows are particularly nice.

We found this church a lovely place to come and pray, inside the lighting was very well done.

The organ music made it feel even more of a spiritual home

While exploring Kilkenny you can’t help but notice this huge church from a distance. As you approach it’s presences is enormous and right near an all boys school. You can go inside to check it out for free. It’s stunning! It’s huge and high ceilings. You can walk around and see all the details of the building. Definitely worth checking out!

Kilkenny is beautiful overall. Take a couple of hours and just walk around. There is another historic building just around every corner. Don't miss going inside of St. Mary's Cathedral and having a look. You have access to just about everything in the church, all the way up to the altar. I was able to take some fantastic photos. Really enjoyed the visit.

As this cathedral isn't very old we hadn't visited it on previous visits to Kilkenny - hadn't been too interested, but glad we made the effort on our recent trip. The mosiacs and stained glass are absolutely stunning - a must see and hidden treasure

Beautiful Historic Design, we stopped in for a concert. It was a high school band from Washington State.

St. Mary's Cathedral is a 19th cent. edifice in a different part of town. It is absolutely vital that these two attractions are separated out

Unless the photograph is correct people a liable to review the wrong attraction. St. Mary's Church on St. Mary's Lane was built in the 13th century, whereas St. Mary's Cathedral on James' Street is a 19th century structure built heroically during the period of the great famine 1843-1857. it is built on the plan of Glouccester Cathedral in England.

When leaving Caisleán Chill Chainnigh (the Irish language for Kilkenny Castle) I spied gothic spires soaring in the distance, luring me to learn which cathedral lay beneath. The imposing height made it look closer, but it was a 15-minute walk—well worth the time. Unfortunately upon arriving, a worship service was about to commence, so my excursion was only of the vestibule (no photographs) and surrounding manicured grounds, a peaceful respite. Subsequent research revealed that Saint Mary’s was designed by William Deane Butler, and construction began in 1843 and was completed 14 year later. The cathedral is constructed with locally cut limestone in a cruciform floor plan in Early English Gothic architectural style, believed to have been based on England’s Gloucester Cathedral. Situated on Kilkenny’s highest point, it is a significant local landmark—and the reason it appears close to Kilkenny Castle.
