This place is likely off the beaten path for most, but as it fit into our drive from Galway to Donegal, we figured why not?! The place is marked with signage and you take a narrow one lane driveway past some farmhouses to a small parking area. I had my family with me, my husband, both my daughters and my son in law and grandson. We had a delightful time just looking over the land and... More

The ancient castle of the Gara's looms up out of the fields as you round a bend in the road; it is almost unexpected, like somebody dropped it here from outer space. The castle is so out-of-scale with the small fields that is surprises you, even though you know it is there. The ruin is not well kept. Cattle graze... More

My mother is a Gara and visited the castle in 1973. I visited in 1995. It is a ruin, surrounded by livestock fields, overlooking a graveyard offering eternal rest for many O'Garas and Garas, with a distant view of Lough Gara. The spot is peaceful and verdant, the ruin heaves from the ground, and when I was there, a clutch... More
