The house is very interesting - the birthplace and home of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846–1891) one of the leading political leaders in Irish history. And the walks are pleasant through lovely park lands of the Forest Park which is quite beautiful. I would have liked to spend longer here. There seemed to be several trails - would have been lovely... More

I used to come here all the time as a kid. The carpark is a bit run down now. The real highlight are the big trees from around the world. Bring a picnic, playground for kids and go for a walk.

Driving in, we saw signs that this was going to be a disappointment. Unkempt driveways and car park and makeshift looking signage gave the game away. Entering the house, the hallway is ruined by a 1980s reception desk to the right of the doorway, where a bored looking girl was listening to her portable radio. She raced through her description... We spent a very pleasant hour wandering this wonderful house. When we arrived we found there was no tour guide available but a very helpful lady from the cafe brought us up to the house and provided us with self-guiding leaflets. Avondale has a wonderful atmosphere and the furnishings and decor are just exquisite. The exhibits on display are really... More

This is one of the best places to admire the autumn leaves as it is a very tranquil place and holds poignant associations in terms of national history. The signage has sadly not been maintained so the cairn had is sign missing. The river walk and sightings of yellow wagtail is very peaceful. The parking machine requires you to get... More

You could spend hours in this park it's so big and lovely. The paths are just about passable with a buggy but you need two people and a decent buggy. We went down to the river and back up again. Food in the house was cheap and cheerful. We didn't pay into the house.

Really enjoyed our iit to Avondale. Even if Irish history isn't your thing, quite apart from the Parnell side of things this is a charming Georgian country house and it's unusual to get to see inside one as 'pocket sized' as this one. The 2 young guys on the front desk do things their own (quirky) way and made for... More

The first thing to say about Avondale, which merits a full rating demotion of its own right, is the ridiculous parking system. You have to have exactly €5 in change before you can get into the car park. If you don't, you have to drive back to the village of Rathdrum to get change. Beyond that, Avondale is like every... Self guided tour of the house was fine. Lots of nature walks around. Need specific change to get into the car park.

Avondale is a must visit for anyone with a particular interest in Irish history as it was the birthplace of Charles Stewart Parnell. While the house itself is not the grandest of stately homes, the history, and guide, make it a fascinating visit. Admission to the house is 7 Euro. This includes a 25 minute DVD about the house and... More
