After a long time since visiting France I thought a trip to the very famous home of wine would be a perfect step into Spring. I'm still slightly miffed at the lack of welcome, the surly shrugs and sometimes just outright rudeness of the folk I had the displeasure of dealing with in Bordeaux. I am not one to pigeon hole a nation of people but I honestly don't think I have been treated with such coldness or disinterest by citizens of any other country I've visited in over 2 decades. The overpriced food, wine and beer were dumped down on tables without a word. If you don't speak fluent French, forget it - my genuine attempts were guffawed at My husband and I got so fed up the lack of service in French establishments, we went to Italian and Turkish restaurants - where the mood was good and the welcome was big.
When we asked a bartender - why is a pint of beer so expensive in Bordeaux (€7) we were told - "it is to pay for the social security system" and then added - "we don't mind, as we don't drink as much as the Irish". Ouch - there may be an element of truth there, I don't know - but a tad rude to your Irish customer
I will go back to France to the lovely Nice and such places but take my advice, don't waste (what it cost me for a three day jaunt) a grand on going to Bordeaux

The old town is a delightful place to walk round. Very pretty almost everywhere you look. Apart from the stunning architecture there are so many beautiful shop window displays, eateries and colourful flowers. Just a lovely place to wander around.

This Old Town realistically dates back to about the 1800's (post French Revolution) as it put itself back together and reconstructed its identity. Much changed when statues were seized to be melted down and all traces of royalty were systematically removed (or at least severly alterated).
This Old Town is largely visible from the bank of the river and a famous view of the lights at night in Place de la Bourse reflecting in the water mirror is memorable. In between all the neo-classical elements are some interesting modern art pieces that lighten up the mood and add some color and interest.
Old Town Bordeaux is fun and vibrant. We'll be back.

This is where you want to walk around. Try to arrange a walking tour, either on your own or with a guide. Lots of great historic architecture.

The old town centre with the grand palaces and monuments is mostly pedestrian area easily accessible by two tramlines travelling at the borders. Besides looking at the sights it is a good place to shop being full of French boutiques and outlets offering clothes, shoes, toys, delicacies you will not easily find abroad. If you want to concentrate to one establishment the famous Galeries Lafayette department store with a building for men and women serves best to save time.

This is a wonderful and very old city. It is an experience to wander the old streets and alleyways of the city and to see the historical buildings. We visited on a very warm day in September and spent considerable time at the reflecting pool. It's mirror like surface was amazing. With barely a thin film of water at its surface the sky and people were provided a mirror like image as children played and folks enjoyed the cool refreshing surface and occasional misting. Worth a visit if you are in Vieux Bordeaux.

Right across from the river and port, this is a lively mixture of historic buildings like the
Grand Thester built in 1773, lots of restaurants many in reclaimed 18th and 19 th century buildings. A few actually operating for over 100 years. It's a living place with businesses, neighborhood housing and museums. You can spend hours wandering around and still come back for more

Located in the center of Bordeaux, along the river, Vieux Bordeaux is home to several unique areas. There are areas dedicated to shopping, old neighborhoods and of course the historical areas and buildings that dot this area of town.
Well worth visiting this area when in Bordeaux.

There are many attractive old cities in the world but not all of them combine that physical beauty with the many other great attributes of Bordeaux.
It is a city that throngs with life and activity. It is busy and yet preserves a companionable and relaxed ambiance. There is no shortage of historical sites to wonder at but the visitor is also amply provided with great museums, fine restaurants, convivial cafes and bars, shady and attractive parks and gardens. There is a variety of venues for live entertainment from rock to ballet whilst talented and amusing street-performers abound. The riverfront is also a great asset, lined as it is by gardens, sports facilities, cafes and upmarket shops.
Bordeaux is very easy to get around on foot but also boasts extensive, comfortable and efficient public transport in the form of buses and trams.
If I was to say anything negative about the old centre of Bordeaux, it is that there is too much traffic. The roads are noisy, smelly and a chore to cross.
But that is a small negative in a very positive experience overall.
In summary, I doubt if Bordeaux could be seen as the number one city I've visited by any individual measure but, as an all-rounder, it is hard to beat and definitely high on my list.

I am passionate about history, architecture and unusual places. A visit to old Bordeaux allows me to satisfy these interests. But Bordeaux is so rich that it takes several days to really discover it. A visit is not improvised, except to like surprise at every corner to who knows how to observe. Every neighborhood of the city belongs to an era. From the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Then choose a theme. Mériadeck, for example, is a pure product of slab architecture built on the site of the old Mériadeck, district of the destitute. From the Grosse Bell to the Porte Cailhau, we are in medieval Bordeaux. In the adjacent streets of Rue Sainte Catherine (rather towards Place la la Victoire) nestle buildings of rich shipowners with Spanish-style courtyards (16th / 17th centuries). The quays; the place of Parliament, of the Stock Exchange, place Gambetta, the alleys of Tourny, course of the stewardship, it is eighteenth century / classic. Pey Berland is 11th century, the hospital Saint André 14th century... Soak up a guide, prepare your visit and search.
