- Rob SGold Coast, Australia1,220 contributionsRamparts best part of St Malo. When visiting Saint Malo, the ramparts are the best part as you risk rain to brave the wind and look outwards, or gaze in wonder at the uniform wall of buildings inside. St Malo is filled with tacky tourist shops, food sellers, restaurants and a bewildering number of accommodation houses that jam the narrow streets. My suggestion - stick to the ramparts.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2023
- George SMiami Beach, Florida1,620 contributionsGood views of the old town and the bayThe ramparts are part of the wall that surrounds the old town of Saint-Malo. It is not a continuous loop but the longest section of the ramparts faces the English Channel side. Nice views of the town and the bay. It is free.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2023
- Adriana YukaCastlebar, Ireland9 contributionsI recommend 👍🏻We won’t forget this place, beautiful view. There’s a “beach” and a “pool” for you to enjoy warm weather. We went in the beginning of October so it was a warm weather and perfect to walk through the “walls”, taking some pictures and after this put on your swimsuit and enjoy the beach and the pool. And it wasn’t crowded ✌🏻Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 8, 2023
- Thomas VOakland, California17,519 contributionsWalk on the City WallsThe best thing to do in town is to take a long walk along the top of the city walls. The views of the bay, sea, harbor, and the town are extraordinary. You will find statues along the way and see some restaurants down below.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 16, 2024
- The Infinity G75 contributionsA coastal gem in BritannyMany people miss this beautiful town on the French coast. Much of the series "All the Light You Cannot See" was filmed here. This is one of the few towns in France that was mostly destroyed during WWII. Thankfully, many of the new structures within the ramparts have been rebuilt to reflect the original architecture. If you have time take the short ferry ride to Rinard across the harbor. The views are spectacular.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 30, 2024
- James_SamDerby, United Kingdom601 contributionsStunning views from the medieval city walls!A pleasant walk along the sun drenched walls of St Malo. Stunning views across the surrounding seascape from the medieval town walls. The salt water sea filled swimming pool was interesting to watch the people dive into the water. Good views of the surrounding beaches. Steep steps in places though. Takes around an hour at a leisurely pace to walk the walls.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 5, 2024

On holiday and decides to enjoy the amazing views of Sr Malo rampards. Good sturdy flat shoes needed to defy the cobbles manage the walls. Plenty of steps so not all parts of the rampards are suitable for people with mobility issues also steps to enter individual shops too inside the walls. Amazing views. We took the little train toearn the history before visiting individual places of interest. Allow at least one hour to walk the rampards and time to see the shops and have a cuppa and crepe. Bring plenty of €€ as expensive.

The old walled city Intra Muros is a must see place for any trip to Bretagne and a great place to stop for lunch. The ramparts provide fantastic views of the surrounding coastline which are stunning on a clear day. You also get great views of the old streets and structures of the old city. There are over 100 restaurants within the walls. Lots of ground level and underground parking around the city. This is a great overnight stay location with lots of hotels inside and outside the city. There is also a fantastic huge beach which you can also see clearly from the ramparts.

These ramparts are amazing. You can walk all around the old town and there a spectacular view of the sea. Be sure to be there when the high tide come in. It happenes very fast, and the splashing against the walls are beautiful to see. Especially if the sunds out.

After weeks of snow, ice, rain...and Covid, we had to get out of the house; so we headed over to St. Malo. As we love to walk, my wife and I went straight to the remparts. Whether you walk quickly or at a leisurely pace, the views of the sea, the old city and the beaches are lovely. In this time of Covid, it was also great to see restaurants and kiosks offering takeaway food—not the case in many towns and cities. Well worth a visit.

We enjoyed a lovely late summer weekend and the weather was fantastic. Strolling the ramparts there is life all around. Families on the beach, swimmers in the pool and activity center and sailing school on the beach. It is clean and beautifully historic. Wonderful to stroll and enjoy the beautiful views and sea air! There are many access points to and from the ramparts from the old city.

After an ample breakfast a walk around the remparts helps burn it off, lets you take in the views and get your bearings around the Intra Muros. The Battery be la Hollande, or Place Du Quebec and great little spots to stop have a snack or two (baguette/tarte fraise) and take in the beach views, island spot and look across to Dinard (easy ferry trip from Porte de Dinan). After a good walk around you'll have worked up an appetite for one of the restaurants/bars by the Grand Porte or Porte Saint-Thomas. Or hit the beachs below the remparts and go for a dip!

Anyone know the name of the bakery in Saint Malo that is portrayed in All the Light We Can See? Is it still around? Don't have time for a tour, going to Mont Saint Michel tomorrow?
Written May 15, 2017
Found the street where the story is set but after the devastation the area is too new. Unable to locate bakery when we visited
