The royal church of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse was built between 1505 and 1532 by Margaret of Austria as a monument to the memory of her husband, Philibert the Fair, Duke of Savoy. It is a masterpiece of the Flamboyant Gothic style and is richly ornamented with magnificent tombs, a fine altarpiece, statues and choir stalls that testify to the artistry of 16th century Flemish craftsmen. A museum is housed in the monastic buildings.

Beautiful church and monastery in the centre of town, we arrived just as mass was about to start so we didn't want to intrude too much in the interior but the scale and whole Gotic building makes this must see in Bourg-en Bresse.

A must see in the area of Bourg en Bresse! This monastery can be seen from afar with its tall roof covered in coloured, glazed tiles. It's style is flamboyant gothic and there is a nice collection of 16th century paintings and religious statues. Unfortunately, there were constructions going on when we visited and some areas were restricted.

The place is compact, well preserved, and partially under reconstruction for the moment. Definitely worth visiting if in Bourg-en-Bresse.

A must see in the region, often there are art expositions for those who do not like the old stones. Do not miss the "stalles."

The buildings are simply majestic, with beautiful rooftops, flamboyant courtyards and history all over. The locals compare this to the Taj Mahal of France - I'll let you read up why...

The church is really fantastic. There is also a good art museum inside; when I visited it, there was a wonderful Gustav Doré exhibition.

While the cathedral is bare, the alcoves contain exquisite marble carvings - some on tombs, some on other decoration. This is worth a trip from Lyon.
