After visiting two lovely chateaux (Chambord and Chenonceau), we found this chateau to be a total waste of our time and money. Yes, the grounds are nice (others are nicer) and the structure is ok (not fabulous, but we were 'game'), but the most annoying...More

We started off looking at the contemporary art exhibition which was very varied and full of creativity, from video through to sculptures in various out buildings around the grounds. The numerous conceptual gardens will probably look much better as they grow during the season but...More

Chaumont-sur-Loire castle is a major landmark on the road from Blois to Amboise, not to be missed. After the king’s accident, his wife Catherine de Médicis made a swap with the king’s favourite Diane de Poitiers and took over Chenonceau. A good choice apparently …...More

We had about 3 hours here and it was barely enough. We started with the Gardens which all had a futuristic theme of gardening and living in the next century and how the two are entwined. Very creative, very interesting, and still amazingly beautiful. We...More

I’ve never seen this one listed in a top 10 of Loire but it should be! Both my friend and I agree this was one of our favorites. It’s the only chateaux in which you could actually see yourself living in – and it was...More

This beautiful castle is like a fairy tale castle to me. Beautifully decorated, beautiful history (worth taking the guided tour) and magnificent garden that you have to time to enjoy. The garden part has some interesting exhibition and to entertain the children you can ask...More

I could have spent 2 days here. For several months of the year they hold a garden exhibition. Over 20 gardens were on display, smallish gardens, artisan gardens, formal and recycled gardens, veg gardens, artistic gardens. Amazing. We started off walking around the woodland garden...More

Hi. I saw your comment on tripadvisor that you went to around a dozen chateaus. I will be in the Loire Valley for 3 days in September. There are so many Chateaus so I am wondering which you think are the best? I am trying to get a variety of different types so I don't see the same type over and over. In terms of variety I believe there are forts, Italian style, ones with drawbridges and dungeons, fairytale castles.... So far I have Chambord, Chinon, Chinouchu, Villandry's gardens and Usse. Should I remove any from the list. Should I add any?

Hi Sabrina, to be honest many of the chateaux are all fabulous. If you have not been before I would do the list you have in mind - you will be very happy with the variety. Villandry for the gardens, Chenonceux for the... More
