Standing on an island in the middle of the Indre River, the Château of Azay-le-Rideau was built during the reign of François I by a rich financier, Gilles Berthelot, who wanted his fabulous new home to combine the latest technical innovations from Italy and the art of French architecture. The Château is a jewel of the early Renaissance and in the evenings during July and August, its romantic gardens come alive as the setting of the special night tour: "The Magic Mirror". New! The castle opens the doors to its roof. Come admire the exceptional 16th century roofwork. Designated world heritage site by UNESCO. So its not huge and the grandest in the Loire, but it is a great little chateaux. We visited on a lovely sunny day and it was gorgeous, sitting there surrounded by water, its stone walls gleaming. Sits nicely in the town without dominating it,...More

It was the most beautiful and charming castle I have ever seen. Perched by a little lake and surrounded by a pretty park, I found it to be the perfect combination of style and country side comfort. Lacking the overcrowded shiny furniture of its era...More

When I came into the room I thought what an inapt reconstruction. Other visitors passed. Suddenly the sounds started. And the table livened. And the creatures too. With a lot of humour. I had to laugh. This was one of installations by Piet.sO and P.Keene....More

We - Family of four (incl. 15yr old girl and 17yr old boy)- were mildly disappointed, perhaps because the guidebooks eulogised the chateau and it didn’t quite meet our expectations. It is a handsome chateau but it isn’t huge, it doesn’t take long to walk...More

We first came to visit Azay-le-Rideau two years ago when the chateau was undergoing restoration. That visit was well worthwhile and interesting - but nothing compared to seeing the finished result. A tremendous credit to the imagination and workmanship of the restorers, certainly worth calling...More

A "must see" of the Loire Valley. Extremely well restored, Lacking surely some furnitures as usual in France but the catsle itself is incredible. You can have a snack, lunch or coffee in front of the castle (reasonnable quality) and that is very cool
