The tourist office in Chartres is located in a beautiful half-timbered house dating from around 1500, called "La maison du saumon" (House of the Salmon). The beams are decorated with large wood carvings depicting a salmon, the Angel of the Annunciation, the Virgin, the legendary Spinning Sow, and a vine with a snail. The inside is not so impressive. Despite the claims on the tourist office’s website, we didn’t feel particularly welcome and didn’t leave with more great ideas than we could have imagined. On the contrary, when we told the lady at the reception desk we planned to spend several days in Chartres, she didn’t offer any suggestions apart from the obvious (visiting the cathedral and taking the train to Maintenon to visit the chateau). A pity, really, because we found many worthwhile sites in Chartres. She did tell us the Museum of Fine Arts was closed on Monday, though. So we planned a visit on Tuesday. Turns out it was also closed on Tuesdays. So we had to skip it altogether.

Once we found this beautiful building, we felt it was such a worthwhile stop. We don't usually patronize TIs, but we wanted more information on the town and the Chartres Illuminations. We always make sure to start our interactions with a greeting before we start asking questions. The two young ladies in charge that day were very helpful in getting us maps and orienting us to the different illuminations around town. They have a nice gift area and we found several things to buy. While the interior no longer matches the historical facade, it is lovely and clean.

We stopped here after we had already walked about the entire town, which was a shame as the worker was extremely helpful, telling us the best places to go in town and how to get there. Worth a stop, especially if you haven't done much research.

Maybe it was a mistake to start our day in Chartres at the Tourist Bureau. Although we were the only tourists there, we were made to feel that our presence was an inconvenience, if anything. How? No smiles, no friendly greetings, no “How can we help you?” Instead a frigid “Bonjour,” after which a single brochure was thrust at us, and the personnel got back to what to them was really important. We’re not sure if it was their iPhones or something else. Considering that the Tourist Bureau exists to promote Chartres, and promotion happens when the people doing it are friendly and enthusiastic, we would say that right now, they do Chartres a disservice.

There were for me so many little surprises in Chartres on my one-day visit there recently, not the least of which was the House of Salmon! An elegant, half-timbered building with nautical images carved into its walls and supports, it's one of the most impressive sights in the city, and a very easy one to visit, as today it is the tourist information center.
While I'm on that last, I found the personnel there very friendly and even more helpful, in advice about what else to look for in Chartres (other than the obvious, one of the greatest cathedrals in Europe), and I thank them for that. Even if you don't want a map, or don't have a specific question, stop in to get a look at the interior in this place - nothing fishy about it heh heh!

This is one of the nicest buildings in Chartres, very well preserved. The tourist office of the town is installed here, do not hesitate to enter for free city info and some souvenirs, the staff is very friendly and helpful!

Well preserved and used as the tourist office so a good place to start your visit to Chartres. Doesn't even smell of fish.
