The citadel of Besançon is amazing with a tiny zoo and few more attractions in it. The best thing about this citadel is it's location which is on the whirl of a river. Wonderful place to visit.

You really must make time to see the Citadel if you're visiting the city (but allow a couple of hours at least). It has something for everyone: an interesting Resistance museum (which covers other aspects of World War II), and a very good restaurant (although...More

Besancon seemed like a quaint little city when I was planning my trip through the Burgundy region. The citadelle is the real draw of the town, and it's easy to tell how it was a great place for a historical fort. The views from the...More

This is a must-see attraction. The fortress itself is stunning, and you can climb up to the top of the curtain wall on either side, for excellent views of the fortress itself, the town, and the river. Start with the high-quality audiovisual presentation in the...More

It's worth taking the walk up to the top even if you're not interested in the zoo and everything. The walk is amazing. Don't bother driving. The view changes along the way and is just mind blowing.

Unless you're really fit, take the bus, reasonably priced and drops you outside. You can wander freely around the first section inside the external wall. This may be enough for you, but there is so much more to see. The animals on the display seem...More

A great day out. The zoo was very interesting and the tigers amazing. The history lectures and exhibitions were well worth a visit. Could easily have spent more time here

We always take friends here when visiting Besancon, especially for children. It is a great day out, although it may pay to check if all the attractions are open. On our last visit the light show and history of Besancon in the church was closed.

We spent most of our day in Besancon in the citadel. For a modest single entry fee there is so much to see and do, we couldn't fit everything in to a single visit. The Resistance museum was fascinating, but to get the most from...More

I did not pay for entry as I lacked the time, but it was interesting to walk in a little bit and see it. I would definitely pay to see the couple museums, the zoo would not be of interest. There's a fair amount of...More
