The Porte Noire is a fascinating preserved Roman triumphal arch into the old city of Besançon- incredible to think it has been standing since about 175 AD. If you are interested in detail and mythology the sculptures on some parts of the gateway are still...More

Great to take a look at on your way to the Citadelle. Hard to believe that this Roman triumphal arch is more than 2000 years old !

Just a gateway but a Roman one in the heart of old Besancon with buildings keyed in either side. Nothing remarkable but its survival.

The city of Besancon has been built, quite literally, around this gate. It is exactly two cars wide, but only one lane nowadays as it was built for slow-moving horsecarts. Good for history buffs.

Amazing this arch is still standing centuries after the Romans built it. A tribute to Roman engineering and masonry. Architecturally beautiful.

Walked to this attraction to look around and also did the Cathedral St Jean as it is only 20 or so metres from the old city gate. Kept on going and went up to the Citadelle.
