There is a wonderful pottery place right around the corner, and then the square was filled with artists. We were there on a Monday evening and it was very busy. We bought a small 4x6 piece of art for around 20 euros to bring home.

One big change is that the middle of the square has been completely given over to cafe seating and every square inch is occupied by tables under umbrellas. Sexy hostesses wait to seat you. This place is extremely crowded and hard to walk through and somewhat difficult to admire with all the people. The artists are on the fringes.

Strolling through Montmartre on a Saturday afternoon in early October, we came upon the Place du Tertre filled with restaurants and souvenir shops and artists selling their wares. We walked around the square watching the people sitting in the cafes, checking out the artist stalls and their drawings and paintings. Fun to see all the different styles and views in the artwork!

Little ,very crowded .touristic square ,surrounded by restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. It is very colourful square full of local artists drawing tourists portraits and selling various paintings .It is located few streets away from Sacre Couer church.
Very touristic ,very crowded, very expensive restaurants/cafes but is nice to walk around for few minutes.
Must visit just for the atmosphere .

This is a busy square with lots of cages, souvenir shops and artists. You can have your portrait drawn or sit and sip on a glass of wine and watch the artists at work under one of several canopied Cafes. This square is located on the funicular side of Sacre Coeur.

Although a place is visually nice and certainly had something to offer twenty years ago or more, today it looks like a real tourist trap. We were there on Monday 10:30AM, far from the peak of visits, and still there were hundreds of tourists, every square meter of tiny streets around the Place du Tertre and Basilique du Sacre Coeur was filled with them, so even a slow walking around was a challenge. Impossible to see anything, impossible to enjoy. Haven't seen street artists which were probably lost in the crowds. Many small shops and restaurants looked like permanently closed. Also, unlike the other parts of the city the area was dirty, a lot of garbage everywhere. Very unpleasant.

Painters and caricaturists meet on this legendary square
It is difficult to imagine that Toulouse the other, Picasso, see again, Degas and Modigliani have trodden these cobblestones of this place
Black people therefore make it difficult for you to find the entire place

A few steps away from "Sacré-Cœur", in the Montmarte district, it is possible to see one of the most iconic "Parisian" squares. Within it, several street artists make paintings taking inspiration by what they have around them, giving a delightful dive into the past. Also some of the bar which surround the place are characteristic, in spite of prices higher on average.

Very fun place to visit before or after visiting the incredible Sacre Coeur! A little pricey, but the gift shops have good selections and the artists are incredible. Go get your black and white charcoal profile picture done by Blanc. A Parisian who formerly lived in Korea. He takes a while, usually 30-45 minutes or more, but is WELL worth the time and money. We will be framing our portraits to look at for years to come. 100% recommend!!!

I was looking forward to my return after several years to the famous Tertre square. But what a disappointment, even more it was just a shock when I saw that instead of the historical square once dotted with artists, street singers and the atmosphere of bohemian life (this is exactly why tourists come here), we saw a commercial area with another tourist trap open-air restaurant and only 3 artists (see my photos and that’s all) and no French music or chansonniers. I knew that since medieval times Place du Tertre (Tertre means "stepped lanes" in French) has been the main, bohemian, cultural town square of the small village of Montmartre. What happened now, who and most importantly why was this tradition broken?

The square's once artists, who sometimes outnumbered the tourists, were the great-grandsons of the Renoirs, Van Goghs and Picassoes who once roamed here. Now everything is exactly the opposite. An unpleasant surprise! Disappointed, my husband and I hung around here for a few minutes and went on to wander around our beloved Montmartre.
