Angry old lady was disappointed because i was wearing a shoulder bag in their shop. Aha. Totally crowded (with just 5 visitors) Merchandise cluttered everywhere and very expensive.

It is true: the prices, even over the course of a year, have augmented to make it really prohibitive. But, if you need good madagascar pepper, this is the one and only place to find it. Now it is 12 euros for a small sachet. Their other peppers are also expensive, but, sigh, they are good. You can easily rack... More

Walking by we noticed this shop that looked like a bit of a bazar come high end bulk barn, with admittedly good choice and quality of spices, nuts (roasted and fresh), dried and candied fruit (figs, pineapple). Narrow, deep shop with open bags showing attractive, colorful merchandise on either side. Eye catching, a bit exotic. The prices though, are stupidly... More

I used to visit this shop every time I came to Paris. It is never been an unexpesive place, but the owners seem to have gone crazy now. And the quality follows an inverse direction: it goes down while the prices go up. There isn't anything there that you cannot find (30 to 50 per cent less expensive) in other... More

I visited here on a cold, rainy day. It was like entering the gates of paradise! It was a little busy. I found two items I could not live without, and took a few pictures as i stood wide-eyed, gawking at the beautiful displays. I waited my turn and asked the owner if he could recommend a selection of pepper... More

I used to like to visit this shop, but this was my last trip. It was always quirky, and the elderly owners have always been appropriately cranky - and this was one of the reasons I liked to shop here - but times have changed, and not for the better. Last week, I stopped by and entered the little side... More

The proprietor is an arrogant, pompus individual. Unless you craft your question precisely, he will just answer yes, no or sorry. If you are not a local, you will wait and wait and wait. I have visited this place before to buy spices, but there is no longer any value. I love to buy pepper from places I visit, including... More

We shop here often for Mexican spices and condiments. Their selection of salsas is excellent. You can also find jalapenos, mole, tortilla chips, and canned black beans. It's also one of the few places in Paris where you can get dry black beans in bulk if you're willing to start from scratch. They do carry tortillas (very pricey) - both... More

Staying in Le Marais

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendour. This neighbourhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.
