If you are going to Versailles make sure you explore Parc du Château de Versailles and the Grand Canal. The first time I visited the Grand Canal was during my first trip to Paris in 2005. I remember it like it was yesterday...I met a...More

The view begins from the upper floor of the palace (through the windows) and continues past the formal gardens. From high up, the canal gives the impression of being much larger and longer than it really is. Little boats (non-motorized) can be rented on the...More

This part of touring Versailles was really nice, and you can rent boats and paddle around the canal.

It is hard to appreciate the size of this canal until taking a bike ride around it. It is truly an amazing engineering feat.

A huge water feature inside a huge garden - thoughtfully set out in the shape of a large cross. Just another example of the way in which this stylish palace gardens are augmented by another bigger water feature. The hand of the sun king himself...More

This water feature was created in 1670, in the form of a large cross. The east/west leg of the canal is 1.6 KM and the north/south is just 1 KM. From the Palace to the west end of the Grand Canal is 3.5 kilometers. You...More

The grand canal is certainly impressive. The fountain within evokes its historic past. Worth visiting along with the rest of the park.

To think that Louis 14 rerouted a river to make this happen ... so amazing! It is definitely larger than it appears in the movies. The grand canal is very beautiful and serene, and you can rent a boat to go out on the water...More

The canal certainly lives up to its name. From a distance it looks impressive, even more so close up. Visit early morning , the earlier the better to get a real feel for splendour with very few people around. I arrived at 830am sharing my...More

This was a nice way to break up our Versailles gardens afternoon a little. We took a nice rowboat ride in the canal and grabbed lunch at a place right next to the water.

I cannot say on the canal tickets for Versailles. As for the fountains: the times (I was told) vary by season. We did not see them on our visit. On a return visit I would skip the palace and just tour the grounds, especially... More
