I happen to love the Canal du Midi and have traveled it twice. So, how fun, to arrive in Toulouse (on a river boat or as a tourist) and find this canal that was built, and opened in 1776, to connect the Garonne River with the Canal du Midi and the Canal du Garonne, and provide a navigable route to... The canal de brienne is one of two canals in Toulouse. It runs close to Pont Neuf, and has a lock from the Garonne into the canal. It has lovely trees along each side, and is calm and peaceful.

The canals are still funtioning in todays world although assuming a different role. In days gone by they were a major means of transportation but today, they are a lovely shady place for walk or run or bike ride. At times, its hard to believe you are right in the middle of thei city! The boats which line the canals... More

I wanted my family to discover the Garonne and the Canal de Brienne, so the best option was the Bateaux Toulousains. There is a guy who attracted tourists around for the visit. The comments were recorded in French only and it was very messy and not on time, I have a lot of sympathy for foreigners that could not follow... More

We took two cruise in Toulouse - one up the Garonne and one along the Canal de Brienne. Of the two, the one along the canal was much the more interesting, taking us past the old tobacco factories and teaching us a bit of Toulouse history. If you don't want to take to the water, a stroll along the canal... More

The Canal was built in the C18th to by pass the Bazacle weir so barges could continue off the River Garonne to and from the Canal du Midi. It starts near the Place St Pierre square with a couple of brick built locks as at that point it's in a deep cutting below street level. Apparently it's only about a... More

do not miss either a walk on the side of Brienne channel or/and a cruise on a ship (only 8 to 12€, quite worth the price...) the atmosphere is special: green dormant waters, antique bridges, fishermen and couples in love are surrounding you giving your promenade a romantic atmosphere...
