About
Located in the immediate vicinity of the D-Day Landing beaches, the Mémorial de Caen visitor centre is among the essential sites focusing on the Battle of Normandy and 20th century history. From the origins of the Second World War to the end of the Cold War, museographical displays tell this terrible side of 20th century history. Indeed, Caen, bombarded during the summer of 1944, a liberated yet martyred city, deserved a tribute well worthy of the suffering it endured. This is precisely the purpose of the Mémorial de Caen, but via a continuing perspective and action aimed at reconciliation.

The Memorial de Caen deals only marginally with the D-Day, but deals in detail with the course of the Second World War up to the Cold War. Many reconstructed scenes from the respective time period. Be sure to use an audio guide, otherwise you have to read a lot. One of the best museums on World War II and the Cold War.Visited August 2022Written December 26, 2022
- DJinNashvilleNashville, Tennessee225 contributionsWell organized to learn about the battle of Normandy during World War IIGrowing up in France, I remember visiting this museum on a school trip. With this trip and the opportunity to come back as an adult, I was able to appreciate why. The museum is well organized to learn about the battle of Normandy during World War II, especially how the world went from the end of WW1 into WW2 and how the campaigns, especially D-Day, were orchestrated. Lots of interesting artifacts (some as big as tanks and planes) and really good narrative (consider the audioguide) throughout to get the most out of the exhibits. Highly recommended for all ages.Visited November 2022Written February 6, 2023
- matthias sCologne, Germany377 contributionsVery well doneWe just wanted to get an overview about D-Day. But than we read about Caen Memorial and decided to try it and we didn't regret the entrance fee (regular 25 Euro). The museum is able to put D-Day in the big picture, not only of WWII but also of WWI, illustrates how life was in France during the occupation and how much the French cities were destroyed after D-Day. If you want to save some money, you can google for a discount voucher and buy the tickets online in advance. We saved 5 Euro/ticket.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten June 29, 2023
- Tim VChorleywood, United Kingdom182 contributionsVery moving experienceYou need to allow three hours to do it justice. Superbly laid out, and very informative. It deals not only with the Battle of Normandy and D-Day landings, but also with the events leading up to it from 1914 onwards. There are a lot of very moving first-hand accounts by the local population about life under the Nazi occupation, some of which moved me close to tears. Very highly recommended.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2023

A very excellent tour with a brilliant tour guide, Mario and driver. The group we were in were all lovely people and that made it easy. The museum itself is very moving and a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives. The tour takes you to the beaches and sites. The weather was very hot and the beaches so beautiful it was hard to imagine the nightmare that occurred there. Mario our presenter has to have a special mention. Amusing, entertaining, and general all round professional he made the tour the success it was. Do book. Well worth it.

This museum is *exceptional* and should without question be the first stop if you are coming to Normandy to expand your understanding of WW II history. I'm sure other reviews go into more detail than I have time to, but plan to spend at least three hours there.
I have been to the Holocaust museum in DC and that is excellent but Caen really covers so much more from the treaty of Versailles onward. Bravo Caen!
As we went to other museums we found the written information redundant to what we read at Caen and moved through them a little faster just looking at the displays.
Note: There is a Bistro but the food is pretty sub par and expensive, so bring your own lunch or go after or before lunch and eat somewhere else. It's that bad. I just mention it so you can plan the length of time you need to spend at the museum without getting hangry. : )

A planned stop before embarking on our ferry back to the UK. Plenty of parking in front of the restaurant with great views overlooking the harbour and out to sea. Smart, modern ambiance with a welcoming hostess. Opted for the set lunch menu with a 'what's available in the market' emphasis. Great seasonal menu, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Fantastic flavours, particularly enjoyed the line caught pollack. Lunch was particularly good value. Highly recommended and will definitely be back!

Must be my 10th plus visit over the years. New film this year with very different & interesting ending. (No spoilers)
Be aware if you are taking younger folks in there sre scenes that may upset. As well as very loud munition explosions.

Lovely fine day to visit Utah and. Omaha beaches.
Very good knowledgeable guide Mario, and safe helpful driver Norman.
The Omaha cemetery is sobering recognizing their sacrifice for freedom.

This was the first thing we did on our tour of Normandy beaches and we really enjoyed it. It was a good introduction and I think did a nice job of not glorifying war. War is a last resort and nasty business for everyone, including the victors.

Really great intro to the d-day landings.
Plenty of subtitles for most speakers.
Could go many times and see different and more bits as the screens are all around showing different stories.

Museum Trip.
Informative with an overload of information. Holding and it’s Interior a tad too modern for me.
As a glasses wearer some of the plaques weren’t lit well enough for me to read. Steps to car park no rail - would be beneficial to older or infirm visitors.

Can we park a small motorhome overnight at the memorial car park?

We were there in July 2019. The parking is free for cars, and there is separate parking for campers and coaches which I assume is also free. Saw just now that the camping car park is under renovation starting the 8th of September and access is forbidden. A small camper can be parked on the streets nearby. There is a long residential street leading up to the Memorial with free parking.

I visited this memorial in 1995. At the time there was no memorial to American soldiers who fought in WW2 in Europe. Is there a memorial to them now? Thank you.

At the Memorial de Caen, I did not see something specific for American soldiers. But, at the American Cemetery, in addition to the graves, there was a wall with the names of the American soldiers who gave their lives in World War II.

In my opinion, the whole of the Normandy coast is a memorial to American soldiers as well as all the other nations who took part.
Did you not visit the US cemetery at Colville ?

I am unsure what you are referring to, but the Memorial is a museum and its well worth visiting. They have a holocaust and a cold war display and it was so informative. Just make sure you use the listening device, as otherwise you end up reading alot, and it is small type and fairly dark

My wife and I will be there at the end of May. Should we buy tickets ahead of time? Is there a risk of not getting in if we wait?
Goatsheadsoup10

I don't believe you will have any problem getting in at end of May without having to buy a ticket in advance.

How big are the lockers? And can luggage be stored there while seeing other sites in Caen or just while in the museum?

Visited November 2019 and had luggage with me. Lockers are big enough for coats, handbags, etc. The info/ticket desk will check your luggage that doesn't fit in lockers. They tag it and put in secure area. Lockers and luggage check are free and the people are nice and accommodating.
