The Hakarimata Kauri Grove. Enjoy our own area of Native Bush, including Kauri Trees, (6-800 years old) Glimpses and the sounds of our native birds, streams and waterfalls, all this and more, and it's just 2 k's south of Huntly on the west bank of the Waikato River (Parker Rd, of Hakarimata Rd, continuation of River Riew Rd) I can... 1300 odd steps up, 354m of elevation along a 2.2km track - really enjoyable challenge and recommend to all!

This incredible walkway is situated just south of Huntly and forms part of the Te Araroa Walkway trail. The full trail starts, either at Ngaruawahia or Parker Road, Huntly, depending whether you are travelling North to South or South to North. The central part of the trail has some areas which are more unkept that the ends. The average time... More

Not for the faint hearted, there are plenty of stairs on this walk but your hard work is well rewarded. The view from the summit is simply stunning and you are treated to a huge Kauri tree on the loop. Used by the locals for a running track, it is very popular...however as it is a loop you rarely cross... More

I find the Kauri Grove hike to be a good distance and not as exhausting as some. I like to turn right when the path splits, and walk past the Kauri grove first. Then I come down the steepest track, as it is a loop.

The Kauri Loop Track is supposed to be a 2hr walk according to the signs, but it can be easily in half that time. This was slightly disappointing. The track is fairly steep but doable. Signs explaining the various trees growing along the track, including the Kauri, are very informative and the views from the top are worth the walk.... More

Who knew that there was not just the 1 Kauri so close the Hamilton, but a whole grove! Great walk and awesome views of the Kauri and the surrounding Waikato. You can clearly see the Bombay hills to the north and on a clear day you can make out Ruapehu to the south. Be warned though - all the steps... More

Completed the Hakaramata steps today in Ngaruawahia , 2000 steps through magnificent New Zealand forest . See lots of local fauna and the odd Kauri tree . The view from the top was great . It takes about an hour but there is plenty of opportunity to stop on the way .

We had heard a number of people we know had climbed to the top of the Hakarimata steps, so we thought we'd give it a go. Armed with a small backpack containing our water a few snacks and camera we arrived at 9am on a glorious Sunday morning......and the track was so busy!!!! It was great seeing so many people... More
