Had read about this prior to our visit to La Rochelle and made it top of our things to do. The structure itself is excellent and well worth a photo. The problem is the beggars / vagrants gathered under the arch and the associated aromas....More

This is probably the most beautiful and most popular part of town. Great atmosphere. Lots to see and do and a real lovely place to be - especially in the glorious sunshine.

A gothic tower revamped in the 18th century with a large clock is the entrance to the old part of La Rochelle, with arcaded streets full of shops and markets. There is a good bakery just on the left as you enter, with good baguettes.

This is the hub of the city. Good restaurants and close to most tourist spots. Walk around the harbour or just sit a while and watch the world.
