Good for adults and for kids

We went there for an hour and a half, schedule 2 hours to see it all. Lovely temporary exhibition of Easter Island that explains a lot of misteries as actual simple facts.

Fossils great …
Jul. 2019 • Friends
We went to see the fossils bit of the museum first and were somewhat spoiled as the rest of the museum just doesn’t compare really. It’s a bit of a mish mash of loads of taxidermy (and I mean hundreds) then strange other bits from different countries that don’t quite hang together. Our boys who are bright and easily interested didn’t find much to grab them and neither did I. The stuff from other countries - particularly Africa - just made me want to give it all back to where it belonged. Yes a lift as well as stairs, shop a bit thin and decent loos. But wouldn’t recommend really. They need to rethink this … it’s just not working.

Beautiful displays. Great ethnographic collection
Jul. 2019 • Couples
The museum has been renovated beautifully with its 19th century character maintained. The precious rocks are gorgeous, the flora and fauna collections fabulous, but best of all for us was the ethnographic collection containing an extremely rare and important Easter Island figure as well as an African fang figure of superb quality, among others.

An unexpected pleasure
Jun. 2019 • Couples
This museum has the old and unfortunate habit of linking natural history and ethnography. I am less interested in natural history so we started at the top with the ethnography collection. (By the way there is a lift which is an unusual asset in a French provincial museum in a historic building.) The collections were brilliant and covered not only Africa and the Pacific Ocean but parts of South America as well. They are beautifully displayed by theme and do not overwhelm you with information. You do not have to be a specialist to enjoy the displays. The natural history collections are pretty comprehensive with many stuffed animal on open display.

What a great place to take youngsters (and old folk!!)

Very interesting, somewhat macabre museum, featuring many things .. stuffed animals, birds, oriental and African treasures. Prehistoric monsters and all things exciting for little people. Highly recommended and very educational.

Night in a museum

We visited the museum with family and small kids, very nice collection. I preferred the painting in the staircase with the antilopes but ther is plenty more to discover!

`Interesting and worth a visit for 6 euros`
Sep. 2018 • Couples
This was interesting to visit for a few hours and value for money at 6 euros. If your understanding of the French language is not great , would recommend a translation guide book to fully appreciate the museum contents. There are no audio translation guides/ facilities available and very few Museum staff on the ground floor within rooms to gain more understanding.

Worth purchasing the combined ticket.
Aug. 2018 • Couples
We visited the museum having got a combined ticket with the Towers at the Old Port. We went without our teenagers having failed to convince then that a natural history museum was worth their time! The collection is in really good condition, I was particularly impressed with the taxidermy of which there is a lot. The museum is well laid out and the displays are interesting and well explained. The temporary exhibition of prehistoric life found in the basement was really good with information about the archaeology as well. I was particularly interested in the display on the top floor of religious rituals from around the world. This was given a particularly intriguing ambience with the use if clever lighting. You do need a good level if French to get the most out of the museum as there isn't much by way of translation. You do get a free English map and brief guide book.

Very impressive
Jul. 2018 • Couples
If taxidermy freaks you out, this is not the place for you. The collection of stuffed animals - from butterflies to bison and everything in between - is a sight to behold. The stuffed giraffe on the staircase is a personal favourite.

The collection is eclectic, but each of the 4 floors are organised in a logical manner. The prehistoric collections are impressive.

Buy a group museum ticket for 15EUR, it will also get you into three other museums. The coffee machine on the ground floor is only 0.50 a cup, so I ended this trip with an espresso!

Fantastic Museum
Sep. 2017 • Family
We had planned to go for merely an hour before heading for lunch - but the museum, was so good that the children didn't want to leave. Instead we missed lunch and stayed an extra hour. Packed full of articles, not a huge amount for the children to touch or interact with but the displays were so well done they didn't care. A really fascinating couple of hours, cheap too. Always a bargain.
