We didn’t realise until we got there that you can climb right to the top of the old lighthouse, tickets only €3.50pp. It’s quite a climb up a lovely spiral staircase to the top but there are places you can stop and rest, the view...More

Right at the North Western end of the island, but well worth a visit if only to pick up some trinkets in the shops nearby or stroll along the coastline - free parking, but an entry fee to go up the tower.

Love lighthouses? Then this is a great place to visit - you get two for the price of one - although you do have to climb about 360 steps to conquer both! The exhibition is great ( although you will need to understand French to...More

We went for a stroll around and it was lovely. Weather was great which helped. We stayed local so wondered round a few times.

Driving across the ile de Re was lovely and in April very uncrowded. The lighthouse costs only a few Euros to climb and is well worth it. The spiral staircase is a work of art, as is the lighthouse keeper’s wood panelled room at the...More

... but with a mini blizard going down, whales are probably too inteligent to put their noses out in that sort of weather. However humans are not, and we joined a bunch of other idiots who thought it a good idea to have their eyeballs...More

Having parked in the large car park outside the village, we were initially dismayed when it appeared there was an entrance fee to visit the lighthouse. However, walking in the grounds and around the outside of the lighthouse is free, and offers excellent views out...More

Some fine small restaurants open all afternoon to enjoy reasonably-priced seafood. The two-hour Nº 3 bus ride from La Rochelle train station is very good value. There are also some interesting coastal walks. There is a car park, but beware, the roads even in September...More

We visited this lighthouse but were not really excited by what we saw...250 steps up a small staircase--no elevator- not for those afraid of hights. I just didn't look down. In front of the lighthouse is an area with small stands featuring articles for the...More

hello, yes everything is flat and long enough to do by bike. You have to think of going back to the bridge in the evening before nightfall. There are villages to cross but there are express roads for cycling. goodbye
