This is a small and moving early baptistry for total immersions. It was used before folk were baptised in the churches with less liquid. The frescos are fascinating - one with a dragon pleading with a knight for his life with the script in french...More

Not open all the time, you need to check the time-table , but it is worth getting inside ,nothing impressive ( basically ruins ) but rather moving when you think about the very first Christians (around the 4th-5th C. ) baptized within its walls .

We only had a large bill and they did not accept credit cards at the entrance. Of the small bills in my husband's pocket, there was only enough for one of us to go in. . . The person was indifferent, if not downright unfriendly,...More

Small church built on top of a Roman temple in 5th century. Possibly the oldest church in Europe. Has a great selection of ancient sarcophagus on the floors and painting on the walls. Well worth a look.

We loved learning about the earliest European church and felt a real presence of the early worshippers. Well worth a visit.

Poitiers is a lovely small French city with lovely parks and gentle walks along the river: the restaurant scene is superb and caters for all ages. The usual departments stores as well as individual shops have plenty to offer those who enjoy retail therapy

This is a 6th century foundation; it is extraordinary and shouldn't be missed! It has really early and good frescoes in a space of harmonious proportions. Not to be missed!

We visited this beautiful church with our 4&6 year old boys and we were all touched by how amazing this old building is. Well worth a visit.

If you're a history buff and find yourself in Poitiers, this baptistery is worth a visit. It might be the oldest surviving Christian building in Western Europe. Sit down on a bench and see the passing of the centuries right before your eyes.
