The theater dates from around 12 BC, in the reign of Caesar Augustus. It could hold 8-10,000 spectators. Little of substance remains of the original stage and backdrop or set. Just two of some one hundred Corinthian columns have literally stood the test of time. It was dedicated to Apollo.

This Roman site was sadly decimated when it was scavenged for stone to construct the St. Trophine Cathedral and cloister, thus there’s very little of the original construction left to see. The video is, for incomprehensible reasons, outdoors where it is virtually impossible to watch due to the glare. What little we were able to decipher would seem to indicate this was a quite magnificent structure. It’s a pity the historical presentation of it is so poorly done. If you don’t have the Arles pass don’t pay the ridiculously high admission price. It’s not worth it. Just take a peak through the fence, and you’ll see just as much.

You have to use your imagination with this one; as although there are remnants of the original amphitheatre - it’s half the size it once was, and a lot of the steps have been rebuilt to accommodate seating for concerts being held there today. There’s also only two remaining columns.
It’s absolutely heartbreaking to think how beautiful this theatre must have once been, and that this is all that exists now. Having said that though, I suppose we should be grateful to at least have this still remaining.
Whilst I was visiting I was lucky enough to witness the amazing acoustics of the theatre. An American tourist sang The Star-Spangled Banner; not sure about her song choice! But her vocals were beautiful, and listening to her voice reverberating around the theatre was spine tingling.

Very ruined remains of Roman theatre, but enough of the original to still be an active theatre venue

Very pleasant to wander around the grounds and try out sitting in various areas of the tiers of seats. The acoustics still work well. We wouldn't have bothered paying to come in if it hadn't been included as part of the Arena/amphitheatre ticket, because you can see quite a lot through the railings outside. However, the views of it are better once you get inside with a ticket.

Theatre Antique is a Roman built theatre. It was constructed during the reign of Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Today there is not much left of the original; it's mostly ruins, but surprisingly events are held here during certain times of the year. Worth a stop if you are nearby.

In addition to the impressive ampitheater, Arles also has a collection of Roman ruins and monuments. This theater is still used today as there was a group of youngsters singing and dancing as practice for some event. It is nice to walk around and imagine yourself back in the days of the Roman Empire.

This is a nice site that you can walk around and explore to see the size of the theatre near the town center. However, it is not as well preserved or as impressive as the theatre in Orange which we had seen a few days prior. Worth a look if you are in Arles but go to Orange too.

The theatre is a little disappointing, especially if you have been to similar sites like the one in Orange. However, I think it is still worth visiting. It is a little smaller and less crowded. That gives you the opportunity to spend as much or as little time here as you like without getting in somebody's way. You can see the Roman Arena from the seats and wonder what life was like when the theatre was in its prime.

Another 1st Century AD Roman building. Unfortunately, in the Middle Ages the theatre was used as a quarry and the stone was used to build churches and houses. You do not need to pay to enter. Some of the best views of what is left can be seen from the outside. Start from the gardens near the theatre and the big arched gate and walk up the steps.

visiting the Théatre Antique in Arles gives you a good overview of the Roman history of Arles. Get the combined entrance ticket for the Arènes and the théatre antique. There are a number of panels which will explain the history of the place and its architectural particularities.

Merci d'avance
