...to the public, and staffed by people determined to keep you out. I do not understand why this magnificent building is not open for visitors. It allegedly has a famous carousel at roof level. There are many people behind the desk apparently involved in municipal duties, but certainly not interested in Joe Public.

This is a prominent building of the classical style. It's located next to the Hotel de Ville, and in the lovely place full of trees and cafes.

I really liked the exterior of the Opera and spent some time photographing various details. Take as a whole, it is a bit overdone. But its central location seemed to indicate that regardless of the cities religious focus, the arts were equally important.

The Opera Theatre, which stands in a corner of the Place d'Horloge, has a wonderful façade. The entrance is three bays wide with a balcony above the doors, which is then topped by a pediment with carvings of female figures in the spandrels. In our opinion, it is a more attractive building than the adjacent, but much larger, Hotel de... More

The Opera Theater is located in the busy, central square of Avignon. There are lots of nearby restaurants and other beautiful buildings. The theater does put on performances but we were visiting on a cruise ship tour and did not have time to see a show. Beautiful architectural building.

The Opera Theatre d'Avignon has a prime location on the Place de l'Horloge next to the Hotel de Ville and not far from the Palais des Papes. Alhough not as large and impressive as the grand opera houses of Europe’s more populous cities, it’s very good looking and in harmony with its surroundings. Thanks to our guide, I came away... More

On our tour of Avignon our guide pointed out this beautiful building. It is not the original Opera House as that was burned down. This one dates from 1847 and been beautifully kept. It is worth stopping to view and if you have the time to pop inside.

Sculptures of the French playwrights Moliere and Corneille dominate the facade of this august Opera House. My femme quips that it seems perfect that these two dramatists are watching over the building, Cornielle the master of tragedy and Moliere the master of comedy. We enter the theatre, emotions braced for a roller-coaster ride of passion and tragedy, knowing that comedy... More
