The one-hour tours start at specific times with a guide and that's a good thing. We didn't see the time passing. Thanks to this passionate and fascinating person we learned a lot about the local history and the organization of this place.

For the traveler interested in Jewish history, this is a must-see. But it's a fascinating tour for anyone who happens to be in the area. The volunteer who took us through was passionate about her interest in the subject, and it showed. A very worthwhile stop.

The Synagogue tour was wonderful. The tour guide spoke English and was extremely knowledgable. The synagogue is the second oldest synagogue in France. It is in the Baroque Provencal style with lots of ornate gold painted carved wood. We’d never before seen a synagogue where the Bima (where the rabbi sits) is in the back. Also unique was the “Elijah Chair” reserved for the prophet Elijah.
The synagogue itself is locked but tours are on the hour and you arrange for them at the shop on the corner. Reservations aren't necessary but it seems that the language of the tour is determined by who gets to the office first. We were the only couple on our tour but a woman came in just as we were about to leave for the synagogue and wanted to take the tour. However, she didn't speak English so the tour guide told her to come back in an hour for the next tour.

I had never heard of « the Pope’s Jews » until I visited this site. A guided tour comes with the admission price; our guide spoke French and English. It was interesting and surprising.

A visit to this Synagogue / Jewish Comtadin Museum was a touristic high point in our eight-week stay in the Vaucluse. The site itself is small-scale : the two-story Synagogue building, with an upstairs prayer room for men and a basement prayer room for women together with a ritual bakery, located on the cramped Hebraic Street that was once the Cavaillon ghetto. The tour of the Synagogue was comprehensive, unhurried and intimate. Our very able guide provided a wealth of information and anecdotes and answers to our questions to explain not just the unique design and decoration of the well-preserved Synagogue, but also the precarious living situation of this tiny and oppressed community. (Ask her about Blanche Mossé and Lucie Astruc !) We came away both fascinated and moved by the story of the Jews in the Comtat Venaissin.

This is the 2nd oldest synagogue in Europe. It was built in the 1400's. They provide a tour through this small synagoge which is no longer in use as there is no Jewish community still living there. It is a very small synagogoue & was redone in a baroque style of design which seems so odd in a synagogue. It was amazing to learn how diffrently they did things then.

Arrived at the Synagogue and greeted by Site Manager/Tour Guide. Perfect English, much appreciated. Gave us a wonderful tour of the Synagogue and information about the history of Judaism in Provence. Some very interesting artifacts.
Most accomadating and knowledgeable.
Many one way streets in Cavaillon, Police helpful, all seem to know about the Synagogue and offer directions including where to park,
**Senior citizen discount available.

The history of this synagogue is fascinating. The Jews of the region were protected, to a certain extent, by the Pope. However, the design and consequent development was from non-Jews. As a result, this building is a small roccoco style synagogue that could accommodate about 50 worshipers. The practices of the day were explained in great detail by our wonderful guide, Angelique Lopez. It is hard to believe that this very rich one hour experience set us back only €3. Don't miss this gem!!!!

Highly recommend this stunning synagogue. The history of the synagogue and the community is profound and fascinating. Touched by the resiliance of a small community of 200 people who kept their faith through oppression. This site is very well maintained and preserved.

Open every day from May, 2 toSeptember, 30 (except Tuesday): 9.30 am - 12.30 noon and 2.00 - 6.00 pm. Tours at 9.30, 10.30 am, 11.30 am, 2.00 pm, 3.00 pm, 4.00 pm and 5.00 pm.
Enjoy your visit...

One , I wonder if larger jewish tour groups ever visit Cavaillon or Carpentras and establish a Minyan for prayer and two are they allowed to do that?

Bonjour, la Synagogue n'est plus qu'un musée; il n'y a plus de communauté à Cavaillon et donc pas de service.
