The Roche de Solutre is a must-see for the Burgundy area. This is an easy hike with amazing views along the way and at the top. We did not stop in the museum areas, just made the ascent and enjoyed the peaceful views of the surrounding countryside.

It is not the kind of place you plan a trip to do - but if you are in the area it is well worth visiting. If nothing else a good opportunity to walk off some of those glasses of wine that you probably have been enjoying if you are an adult.
The weather was not great when we were there, but it was still a most enjoyable walk up and down.
Depending on age and fitness I say you need 45 minutes at least to really enjoy your walk up and down.
Parking available at the bottom of the rock.
If you are there with children you need to be aware that there is absolutely no fences or anything around the edges at the top. It is a walk that children can do, but keep them at safe distance from the edge.
Very nice view from the top.

I live not too far from the Roche, so I have visited on several occasion. It has both a historical and a worthwhile attraction.

Please read up on the history of Francois Mitterand, who made a yearly pilgrimage to the Roche de Solutré.. It is very much a wine region and it is definitely worthwhile visiting some of the vineyards close by.

There is actually more than one visit to made for the more serious walkers although this would require a little bit more forward planning..

I have always enjoyed the visit, it is a relatively easy walk to the top, the path is easy to follow and will taka anywhere form 20 minutes to 1 hour depending on capacity.

Definitely not a visit for wheelchair bound or for those who have difficulty with walking.. It does not require any particular physical capacity but high heels would be a major mistake....trainers or basic walking shoes are quite sufficient.

A great view across Macon and all the way to Switzerland. We arrived around 4pm on picture perfect Monday in October. Fresh wind, blue skies and a view to die for, as the day started winding towards the next bottle of Chardonnay.

One of the most dramatic views in the entire wine world. We have been here many times and always find it exciting.

This was a add on to our already planned trip, and I'm so glad we did it! First, the countryside with vineyard after vineyard is wonderful! When you get to the site, take the time to check out the museum. It's small, but very well organized and explains the pre-history of this location beautifully. At the time we were there, there was also a special exhibition by the artist Benoit Clarys, which was surprisingly good. After we wandered through their external exhibit explaining about dig sites and some of the habitat, we walked the pathway up to the peak of the rock. So, wear appropriate clothing for the gradual, but steady uphill walk. Footwear is important as some of the terrain is small stone and pebbles and slipping can be an issue. They really did a great job creating the path, it's well-marked and the climb is gradual, so although it's effort, it's manageable. We were on a bit of a schedule, but if you're spending more time, you can easily see where some additional paths create longer walks to another interesting rock site. The views are fantastic! Seeing the countryside with all the vineyards is worth the climb alone! Highly recommend taking the time to visit this interesting prehistoric site and geological wonder.

Thank you Heather for your comment. We are delighted that you enjoyed the ride! It requires in fact a minimum equipment: water, sneakers, cap.

The walk to the top of Roche de Solutre is a very easy walk that can be done with choice of a couple of different routes. One that includes three peaks.
It is accessible to any person and won't disappoint if you are lucky to have a clear sky. Amazing views over the valley and vineyards.

Be sure to visit the Musee de Prehistoire at the base of the Rock of Solutre. It's an important archeological site and the museum explains irs significance well. There's also a nice coffee shop and welcome center near the base of the Rock of Solutre.

We've been taking visitors to the top of the rock for years and it is always much appreciated. The climb can be tough in hot weather, but the views from the top are spectacular. The museum is worth a visit, you can have an English commentary which is excellent..

Very nice walk to the top of this rock, where history speaks to you. And the views from above are stunning.
