The Abbey of Saint-Victor can be reached with a nice walk from the old port. Externally it really looks like a fortress and is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles. Entrance is free, but the crypt requires a fee.

This Abbaye is an ancient part of Marseille (and France, for that matter) and parts of it date back to the 5th Century AD. This building is Romanesque architecture in its truest form! The taller towers were later rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries. A visit inside reveals some impressive ancient sarcophagi. A stop here is a historic part of your Marseille walking tour. Take a step back in time...

This is a lovely old abbey which in parts in currently under restoration. From the outside it looks like a small castle that has eroded over the years, and that gives it it's charm. Inside it's pretty much the same brickwork without it being anything spectacular. You can also visit the crypt for 2 Euros which I didn't do.

Overlooks the West end of the harbour, think these are the bells you can hear throughout. Looks a bit like a castle from below.
Warning - difficult to find from the harbour; no steps or ramp up the huge hill / wall, covered with fast roads; possibly go up hill before the Criee then cut around. We got it on our return from Catalan beach. Large, quiet, peaceful. Not the oldest but cool in both senses. Just below is a square with garden, seats, cafe and toilet (near soap factory)

This is a place with a lot of history that goes back to the Roman times and even before that. The building has suffered quite a lot of destruction and rebuilding along with burning and looting and so on. A church is on site but we did not manage to visit it.

Founded in the 5th.century by a monk,St.Cassien it was enlarged from the 11th.to 14th centuries. It is Marseilles finest piece of religious achitecture. The crypt is incredible and well worth a visit-there is a small charge. It contains sarcophagi, catacombs and the cave of St Victor - one of the most interesting crypts of any abbey. Allow at least 90 mins for the tour.

Another important religious structure in Marseille is the monastery of St. Victor, an 11th-century building, named after Saint Victor, a Roman soldier who became a Christian martyr. Initially, in the 4th century, there were two monasteries set up in the name of St. Victor, one for women and one for men. In the 9th century, however, both were destroyed in one of the city's conquests. Only over two decades later, one of the monasteries was rebuilt, and next is the monastery you can visit today. During the French Revolution, the monastery's treasures were robbed, using the monastery's structure as a warehouse and prison. In 1934 the monastery became an important church in the city.
When visiting the site, it is recommended to descend to the ancient crypt, which includes tombs of several important saints and bishops. You will also see in the crypt some pagan sarcophagi and the pre-Christian era. There is a video in English, which tells about the monastery and the history of the place.
The entrance fee to the crypt area is cheap.
Opening Hours: Daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
How long should you visit? Between half an hour and an hour

According to the hours indicated outside, the abbey would be closing in five minutes, so we nearly didn't go in. However, others were going in, so we decided to anyway. We spent about half an hour wandering round, and there was no attempt to chivvy us or any of the other visitors out. There were information panels in several places around the interior, and a diagram near the door explaining which parts were built when. There was also some music playing in the background that felt very appropriate for the environment. There were two young people there offering free guided tours, though I didn't see anyone take them up on it while we were there; I don't know if they are there every day.

If you have an interest in medieval sites and/or late antiquity, the Abbey is well worth a visit. The crypt is fantastic and there is an English video you can watch (ask the attendant to screen for you) that provides lots of information on the abbey. I walked there from the Old Port area in about 20 minutes. Shame on Marseille, though, for surrounding the abbey with a parking lot. They should revert to the park and fountain that was there previously.

I hadn't included this on my schedule during my day in Marseille but it was in the way down from Notre Dame. What makes this church worth a visit is the crypt as the main church is interesting but nothing special. The crypt is a real warren of chambers and contains an excellent selection of early Christian tombs and sarcophagi which it is good to see in situ rather than in a museum as us normally the case. There are good bi-lingual explanations of the iconography of each sarcophagus.

How many steps are there down to the crypt and up the towers?
Written August 25, 2023
We did not go up. There is a fairly long stairway down and my husband didn’t go. Alway hard to help with mobility questions. Husband is 82 and says I am wearing out his knees so he occasionally waits.

Yes saint victor with the 4th century crypt is located near the entrance of the harbour on your Rt side opposite to the new museums on the left. Once on land walk along southern side of port and go up one street. You pay a small fee to visit crypt inside church.

How much does it cost to see, and how long does it typically take to see everything? Thank you for your help!
Written May 28, 2016
No entrance charge but a small one to visit the crypt. Allow hour to hour and a half. Reasonable walk there on one of the suggested walking routes from the harbour. About 45 min.
