Enjoy history and glaciology

It takes about twenty minutes to climb the 1,000 metres up to the Montenvers-Mer de Glace attraction. Simply hop on board the famous little red railway train. Time will stand still, and you’ll enjoy this vintage method of transport. The track climbs the mountainside, running through the forest, tunnels cut through the rock and over viaducts. You enter the realm of the high mountains, and round the last bend you’ll feel the magic: you’ve arrived at your destination at the foot of the famous Mer de Glace glacier, at an altitude of 1,913m. A stunning panorama opens out before you, with the glacier below, an excellent testament to the climate change in this day and age.

Picturesque views during the train ride up and down the mountain. Breath-taking views at the stop on the mountain. Visited the 'grotte'- but going up and down the stairs (over 340s) each way is definitely not recommended for people who are used to exercise. On the overall, a great place to visit with loads of opportunities for superb photos.

Although the ice cave is man made and has to be re-built every couple of years due to the retreating glacier, it is full of interesting ice carvings and a real insight into what crevasse looks like close up and how rocks get transported in the ice sheet. Entry is free although the train to get there isn't and less... More

On a good weather day this is a wonderful trip to make. There is a fabulous view of the mountains on the way up and a birds eye view of Chamonix and the valley. Once you reach the top the glacier and surrounding mountains are very atmospheric; The moment the area is being reconstructed. The restaurant is open and, for... More

I skied the vallee blanche and met my family here. The train ride back was very picturesque, and there are great views of the bottom of the glacier from viewing station. Beware there are a lot of steps to get to ice caves. There was some construction work on the station which maybe tainted my view a little, but i... More

Worth the price of admission. The view is incredible. The train ride like a scene from the movie "Grand Budapest Hotel."

Worth going. The whole journey of getting there is part of the whole experience I'd say. Incredible views from the train (approx 30mins). The cave itself isn't really big, but still interesting to see.

Really amazing to actually walk inside a glacier. Just remember that this is free if you have a lift pass!

A lovely train ride up the mountain. Then you take a gondola down the valley to get closer to the glacier. Due to Climate Change you have to pretty fit to now reach the glacier. I think there are over 450 step you need to take down and back up after entering inside.

A must see ! The 420 steps are a challenge but we'll worth effort. It's a beautiful glacial cave. There are wonderful views of the glacier and mountains if you want to avoid the steps.
