Interesting visit of the museum explaining the history of the silk trade in Lyon and its importance in the development of the town. Nice display of antique equipment showing the fabric manufacturing. Nice shop with beautiful and tempting silk scarves and items.

We went on a Saturday afternoon at 330 for a guided tour, which turned out to be a demonstration of the manual loom the weavers use. What an amazing process. A lecture of the brief history of the canuts and the revolts of the 1830s followed. That was en francais, but I could follow it enough. The museum itself is... More

Really interesting visit to a museum with a difference - all about the silk trade in Lyon. Fascinating talk given to us by a lovely girl who was very cleverly using the old loom as she spoke. Easy to follow and she answered all our questions. Beautiful fabric. We then went across the road to the shop and she took... More

Even if you aren't a textile person, you will enjoy seeing the demonstration of the working of a jacquard loom and the discussion of how Lyon became a silk capital if you take one of the tours. In addition, two large rooms include displays that fill you in on lots of interesting details about the production of cloth, and English... More

Anyone who is interested in Lyon's silk history should not miss this guided tour (2 times during the day). Fascinating to learn everything about the silk, where it came from, why it came to France, weave tables and of course the invention of Jacquard. With the binary system and by preprogramming everything the weavers were able to perform faster and... More

This was one of the free visits included on the Lyon City Pass. Went to the 11:00 am Saturday tour (in English) and learned so much. There are only a few silk master weavers left and you still have to apprentice to become one of these masters.

This was such an interesting journey through time. To see how the entire silk industry flourished and then crumbled was both fascinating and tragic.

If you are impassioned by Lyon's silk history, and want to see working examples of the craft -- nowadays beginning at $2000 a meter -- then don't miss. We spent hours here, and returned a second time to review the 19th century mechanisms. But if you are not into textiles, you may find this a bit esoteric. The gift shop... More

Simply nothing to see. Better read about the history in a flyer or a travelbook. Walked a long way for this

My partner is rather obsessed with fabrics so i agreed to go to the silk museum and instead of being quite board i found it offered a very interesting history of the silk manufacturer and trade in France. Including some of the scientific advancements that resulted from the growing and breeding of silk worms. Definitely worth a visit as long... More
