The Presqu'ile is a lovely area of Lyon. It's full of restaurants, cafes, fashion and other types of stores. It also has wonderful architecture as well as some stunning buildings. This is certainly a part of Lyon one has to visit.

Between the Saone and Rhone Rivers is this large area, covering the likes of the Place des Terreaux and the Place de Bellecour, Europe's largest pedestrian square. Quite apart from the many restaurants and shops you can see the likes of the Hotel de Ville, and the Bertholdi fountain. There is lots to capture your attention for several hours.

We had an apartment in the Presqu'ile and it was an amazing place to be located, it seemed like the heart of Lyon, with the Rivers Rhône and Saône each side of us. Walking across the bridges to get to either side was a snap, as was public transport, particularly with the metro. Depending on your tolerance level for people pushing in and an overcrowded boat, take the vaporetto from the Confluence up to Gare Saint Paul on the River Saône. Shop until you drop on Rue Victor-Hugo a pedestrian street and Rue de la République, which is part pedestrian. Place Bellecour one of the largest squares in France, to Place Des Terreaux, which has the stunning Bartholdi Fountain. Place Gailleton a small area with lovely monument and benches, Place Ampère with monument, Place des Jacobins with its beautiful fountain, Place Louis Pradel with all the sculptures and Place Carnot with play area and statues. Heaps of places to eat, both restaurants and takeaway. Beautiful architecture, Hôtel de Ville, Eglise Saint-Nizier, Basilique d'Ainay and Théâtre des Célestins to name but a few. This barely scratches the surface, with all the wonderful things which can be found in this very small area.

Presqu'ile has just about everything you need as a local and want as a tourist:

- Big box shopping stores mixed with quality boutique stores and hidden high-end shops.

- Sunday food market along the Saone with fresh oysters on the half shell & local white wines.

- Movies in English (Pathe Bellecour Cinemas), French and just about any language you desire.

- Food? Buchons, upscale restaurants, private dining..you name it and Presqu'ile has it

- Museums: One of my favorites is Les Beaux-Arts. Picnic in the courtyard or try their cafe.

- Cooking classes...30 minute to 3 day cooking classes. There is something for everyone and a great way to meet people.

- Explore intriguing galleries, vintage stores and hip cafes in the 1st arrondissement (1eme)

Enjoy!

I really liked this area of Lyon. It is situated between the Rhône and Saône rivers, and it is full of squares, larger and smaller streets, and many beautiful buildings. It has a very vibrant atmosphere, and can best be explored walking around. If you are planning a citytrip to Lyon, I would recommend to sleep somewhere in this area, as it is close to all main touristic attractions, and not far away from the other areas such as Vieux-Lyon, Fourvière Hill and Croix-Rousse.

Some recommendations for this area: Place Bellecour, Places des Jacobins and Place des Terreaux are three beautiful squares, especially the last one, which is surrounded by the Hôtel de Ville and the Museé des Beaux Arts (recommended if you love sculptures and paintings). I recommend walking around these three squares both during the day and at night, when they are beautifully illuminated. Moreover, if you love shopping, walk down the Rue de la République, which is a very nice traffic-free street with many stores, trees and some street animations on busy days. Eglise Saint Nizier is also worth passing by (free entrance). Furthermore, just walk through the area to see some other nice buildings and feel the vibrant atmosphere. If looking for a place to drink or eat something, you will easily find some nice places here, especially in the area around Rue de la Monnaie and Rue des Marronniers.

From this point you will be able to walk to all attractions Lyon has to offer. Many restaurants and shops nearby. The famous fountain created by Bartholdi is there. He is also the creator of the Statue of Liberty.

The Presqu’île (or "peninsula") is the heart of Lyon, extending from the foot of the Croix Rousse hill to the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône rivers. I walked from one end to the other in one afternoon , stopping wherever I wanted and it did give me a very good idea of what this city has to offer. Feet beware!

There are hundreds of cafés, restaurants, shops, banks, government buildings, museums, the opera house, theatres, beautiful churches, squares, markets and fountains and of course the Tourist office. Specifically, some key sights I enjoyed in the Presqu'ile were:

Place Bellecour and its equestrian statue of Louis XIV
Place Jacobins
Palais de la Bourse
Cordeliers district
Church of St. Nizier
Hôtel-Dieu
Théâtre des Célestins
Grand Theatre ( Opera House )
Hôtel de ville
Bartholdi fountain, Place des Terreaux
Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, ( Palais Saint-Pierre)
Musee des Tissus
Museum of Printing

Some beautiful bridges lead off from both sides of the Presqu'ile to Vieux Lyon and the newer districts across the two rivers respectively.

Silk shops are found here, for which Lyon is famous, where you can find some lovely scarves. Other shops offer tasteful souvenirs and reasonably priced items.
