    A must when visiting Heidelberg
Magnificent view of the old city of Heidelberg, Heidelberg Castle and Nekar river. The walk under the big shady trees is refreshing. Υou have to climb quite a few steps, somewhat steep and a bit slippery to reach the path, but it's worth ιt. Wear comfortable shoes and take a bottle of water with you.

    Great views worth the walk
Definitely great views over the old town and up to the castle. Clearly the steps up from the river are a real effort. We managed to find a carpark a couple of hundred meters from the western end which made the walk up and along a much easier stroll. There were a surprising number of people enjoying the area.

Pretty walk with great view of Heidelberg
My wife and I enjoyed the walk and the views it provides of Heidelberg and the castle. We started at one end which did have quite a few steps to get to the top. It was well worth it. Towards the end it gets into a residential section and wasn't quite as nice. It would have been better to start at that end and end going down the stairs. In any case, it was worth taking the walk.

Start at the Theodor Heuss Bridge and then walk down Snake path.
This is what we did and would be my recommendation. It’s a bit of a climb from the river level, through the initial residential area, to the start of the walk, but significantly easier than walking up all the steep steps of the Schlangenweg from the Old Bridge. It’s not long before you get to the Philosopher’s garden and from here the walk is generally flat and affords great views back across the river to Heidelberg. When you reach the Schlangenweg, you can finish here and descend or carry on to the Hölderlin-Anlage, a pleasant spot with seating commemorating Hölderlins "Ode to Heidelberg" There is a way back to the river from this end, but again I would advise retracing your steps as a shaded walk down the Snake Path, with its various hidden viewing areas to break the descent, is a lot of fun ( well it looked like we were having a lot more fun than those poor souls who chose to climb this route) and has the advantage of depositing you at the Old Bridge, a short stroll from all the bar and restaurant delights of the Old Town.

This is what I miss in other cities, a nice walk under the trees, overlooking the river and the old city center. And easy/fast to get there too!

We got lost, sort of. We began by crossing the Theodor Bridge and kept walking on that main road. We should have turned right on Ladenburger Street. What we really should have done was to hire a taxi to Waldschenke Biergarten. Our goal was to see the Nazi Amphitheater where Joseph Goebbels once spoke to 8,000 people in 1935, Thingstatte.

We did meander for miles on this famous Philosophers Way. These trails were once the solace space for professors and philosophers starting from the late 18th century. The views of old town Heidelberg and the castle are magnificent. There are plenty of trees to converse with also. Every once in a while, we came upon friendly travelers like ourselves, mostly lost like ourselves too.

In reality, if we wanted to get “un-lost” we just needed to find a trail down to the Neckar River, which we eventually did.

Some trails were better than others. My wife did hurt her knee as we found a paved path downhill. Going downhill is worse than going up-hill.

Nevertheless, we spent half-a day tramping around the Heiligenberg (Holy or Saints’) Mountain. Regretfully, we never did reach our goal, but did get to view what many people come to do and experience on Philosopher’s Walk.

So much to do and see in and around Heidelberg, this really isn’t a highlight unless it is a cold dry day and you are bored as heck. It’s a straight slog uphill on ankle twisting cobbles for a view of the Alstadt that can be seen from the riverbank. The viewpoints are littered with trash and graffiti while smelling like piss. Much hyped, not sure why?

Fairly easy hike! I went at around 10am, and it was already hot. Perhaps it’s better to start this hike earlier in the morning.

Amazing views and the walk on either side of the river and over the old bridge is a must. Great food in the town square. History all around but as a scientist finding the inventor of the Bunsen burner Statue in the middle of old town was interesting.

Wonderful walks and a great opportunity to avoid the hustle and bustle of the Altstadt. Bring a picnic and a drink and you could stay on the paths all day
