This to the jail is where students were imprisoned for three days after miss behaving around town. The inside of the building is full of graffiti, which gives you an idea of how students felt throughout times since this has been around for many years. It’s definitely worth seeing.

We just stopped by the student jail to see the exterior as part of our Heidelberg walking tour. Not sure if it is worth the price of admission to go inside the jail

We paid 12 Euros for two of us and saw almost nothing. The prison rooms were full of construction and renovation tools and was impossible even to take a picture. The great hall was closed due to a coming concert, so we couldn't see it either although it was the main reason we paid the money. They did not even mention that the hall was closed and the rooms are under renovation. It was a waste of money...

interesting and a bit odd - a student jail, likely a necessary facility at the campus of any old prestigious, self-respecting university.
The drawings make it a special place as they are a form of personal expression of the naughty students of by-gone era.

I suppose there are other places in the world where university students incarcerated for mostly petty crimes were permitted to express remarkable artistic creativity on the walls — and where that creativity is still possible to see. But there certainly cannot be many, and it is remarkable to see the results of these students' creativity right in front of you from floor to ceiling. This is an unusual if not unique attraction, and while some of the cathedrals and castles one might visit may sometimes blend somewhat in our memories over time, this will always stand out and be clearly remembered. Most worthwhile.

Visited here thinking we could also see the University Library, big mistake! Given a time slot to visit 30 mins later, we paid 4 euros each and returned for a visit which took us less than 10 mins all.

First, up a flight of stairs to see jailed undergraduates graffiti left behind years gone by. Next, down the stairs to see a small exhibit on the founding of the University, 95% of the description are in German though! Out we go, in less than 10 mins in all. Felt really ripped off here.

Recommend you to visit the nearby Kurpfälzisches Museum, which charges 3 euros and give a discount for holders of the Heidelberg Card, so you pay 1.80 euros each. Much more interesting with tons to see for at least an hour & with English description, too.

This "jail" is part of Heidelberg University (est. 1385) and it is quite unique. It is small but worth a visit: do book in advance, as tickets are limited (€3) and go fast.

The Heidelberg student prison was a must stop. Only small but super interesting. The prison housed university students for several years. Entry cost 3€ and this allows you to go up stairs to the living quarters. You can see inside the bedrooms and marvel at the artwork left behind. Each student imprisoned left their mark. Stair access only and would be tricky if very busy.

The student jail has been a part of the Heidelberg tourist experience for decades, if not longer (I believe Mark Twain visited). The thing is, It may even have been part of the tourist experience longer than it was part of the student experience. The University of Heidelberg is the oldest in Germany, and one of the oldest in the world. At the time the Studentenkarzer was in operation, most students were from the upper classes and the aristocracy, and certainly some of them misbehaved. If their behavior was really bad (murder, rape, etc.) they were remanded to civil authorities. This student jail was for more typical "boys will be boys" infractions: cheating on exams, duelling when not appropriate, being more drunk than acceptable in public, etc.
There is a lot to see in Heidelberg, and if you still have time on your hands after visiting the castle, going up the Heiligenberg and the Koenigstuhl, walking the Philosophenweg and the Hauptstrasse, then I can endorse the Studentenkarzer as a part of the Heidelberg tourist attractions, and there is some atmosphere and historical interest there.

I probably enjoyed visiting the student prison, something quite unique that I haven't seen anywhere else. Lots of creative graffiti on the walls from times past. Not quite what I expected for a prison since there were amenities available for the student offenders.
