The Jesuit church is located in the historic center of Heidelbeg, near the university complex, and is one of the main religious buildings in the city. Built during the first half of the 18th century in Baroque style, it externally presents a red sandstone façade with classic lines, enlivened by numerous decorative elements and statues. A Jesuit church on a side street from the main street Hauptstraße in the old town of Heidelberg.

Made this one of our stops strolling through Heidelberg.
We stopped at the tourist center to get an idea of what to see in Heidelberg. The map was only 1.5 Euro and had brief descriptions of each site listed. The church is not on the main thoroughfare so I'm very happy we had the map to lead us to it.
The outside of the church is beautiful and amazing! Once we stepped inside, we were even more amazed. There is no entrance fee to enter the church. I was surprised at how bright this church was on the inside, since so many of the churches are very dark. The architecture, windows, altar, everything was a pleasure to behold.

This is a very beautiful and refreshing church to visit. It appears classically Jesuit in design and shape from the outside. The main altar looks impressive and distinctive in its surrounding.

The Jesuit church in Heidelberg is plainly decorated in an overall white theme. The courtyard is peaceful and adjacent to the seminary with gardens on both sides of the wall. Wonderful organ near the entrance on the second level and another organ toward the front on the right side. Stylish cross free swinging in the breeze, Recommended for some quiet time and meditation.

Tucked in a side street at Schulgasse and Merianstrasse, the Jesuit Church is worth the time to find. While the red sandstone facade resembles its mother church in Rome, the white interior is refreshing for its simple elegance. Upon entering, I immediately noticed the number of lit chandeliers sparkling above the nave leading my eye to the 3 very tall frescoes at the front of the church. They made a nice composition with 2 frescoes over the side altars and one over the main altar. These were painted in the mid1800s. The gilded cornices of the white fluted pilasters, which covered the columns on the nave, gleamed in the natural light as the church also had many large windows besides the crystal chandeliers. The pulpit was ornate and stood out with its gild decor. The barrel ceiling had no ribbing so was not a feature. The dark bench seating, placed in the nave, stood out against the white walls. Gone from the side aisles were those heavy dark altars often seen in other Catholic churches. instead, in one side aisle was a pieta sculpture done in 1905. A notice on an aisle wall informed visitors that the tombstone for Fredrick I was in the crypt -use the left side entrance of the church. The Treasury of the church holds 17th to 19th century clerical art and gold and silver religious objects which may be of interest to some visitors with time to spend in Heidelberg.

The other smaller statues on the roof line represent Christian virtues like love, faith, hope. The church is difficult to photograph because it is hemmed into its location with the adjoining Jesuit College buildings, now university administration and school of philosophy buildings.
The history behind the church is just as interesting as a visit inside. The reason for Jesuits building this church in Heidelberg in the early 18th century was to convert its Protestant citizens to catholicism. Although a good portion of the church was finished by the mid-1700s, the interior of the Heiliggeistkirche remained divided until 1936 so that Catholics and Protestants services could be held simultaneously.
The Jesuitkirche is a working church - the main Catholic Church in Heidelberg. When services are held the opportunity to take photos and to wander around is limited. Visitors might ask themselves, "How well does it compare to its religious competitor, the Heilliggeist kirche?"

Jesuitenkirche, a baroque building dating to the 18th century and belonging to the catholic community. The interior was quite unadorned and white but featured a nicely decorated main altar. Through a door on the side a small museum featuring sacred art was also a nice addition and for free.

What a contrast to almost all the churches you see in europe. Most are somewhat dark and dreary. This one was almost all white and very bright inside. A nice change.

The white interior of this building is impressive. Huge paintings are fascinating. Carving is exquisite in its detail. If you get bored--impossible!--go outside for more sculptures and rose-colored stone.
