About
With its rich collection of masterworks dating from the fourteenth century to the present, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is among Germany’s most popular museums. Both its impressive museum complex and its holdings mirror the link between tradition and modernity. The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart presents its superb collection on some 9,000 square metres of exhibition space offered by the old building of 1843, the famous post-modern Stirling Building, and the Steib Halls constructed in 2002. Among the prominent holdings are the approximately 400,000 works belonging to the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, Early Swabian panel painting and outstanding examples of nineteenth-century Swabian Neoclassicism. The chief emphasis of the museum collection is undoubtedly the Classical Modern period with art spanning the years from 1900 to 1980. Special highlights here are Oskar Schlemmer’s Figurines for the Triadic Ballet of the early 1920s, Henri Matisse’s famous Backs (1909-‒30), numerous works by Picasso including the sculptural group The Bathers (1956), and the Joseph Beuys room installed by the artist himself.

We recently visited the city of Stuttgart in January 2023 and were not happy with our experience. Having paid our entrance fee we proceeded to drop our rucksack and coats off in the storage facility provided however my wife needed to keep her handbag with her as she needed access to her feminine hygiene products. It was only when we reached the gallery entrance that security confronted us and gestured that we were not allowed to take the bag in. We tried to explain the situation but the guard was not prepared to allow us in, and as neither the security guard nor his colleague were able to speak English, and our German is very limited, we were unable to communicate the issue. We returned to the ticket desk to discuss further and we asked if a small discreet pouch could be taken in, however this was declined and we were offered a small clear plastic bag as a solution which is totally inappropriate in this situation.
Looking at their website it stated “that for safety reasons, it is not permitted to eat, drink, carry large bags, rucksacks, umbrellas or pieces of luggage (larger than DIN A4) in our exhibition rooms”. The handbag in question measured approx. 1200mm x 1000mm (roughly the size of A4) however at no point was this discussed or the item measured by a member of staff. The discreet pouch we offered as an alternative was well within the guidelines so should have been allowed in without question.
The whole experience was even more frustrating and upsetting when you align the experience with the message and ethos which is promoted via the large banners within the Museum addressing the issues surrounding discrimination, exclusion and the complex and contradictory nature of society. Issues that are further highlighted in the ‘tense conditions’ exhibition detailed on their website.
My wife was distraught by the entire experience and felt excluded from the gallery due to the fact that she was menstruating and needed regular access to her sanitary products. In 2023 this is totally unacceptable discrimination and has left us with bad memories of both the Gallery and the city of Stuttgart as a whole.
Attempts to contact the gallery via facebook for an email to send a complaint to, were ignored, which further adds to the frustration.
We received an email response once we found an appropriate email contact which states that "We always try to find a solution for the needs of all our guests", which was definitely not the case.

I only toured the permanent collection and found it contained works from many big names including Picasso, Dali, and Warhol. However, the museum is very dated and dingy. It definitely needs an interior facelift.

Of all the museums I’ve visited in Europe, and South and North America, this visit was one of the very best! Beautiful galleries with ample space and wonderful light were filled with a well-curated collection of stellar artists. We especially liked the late 19th and 20th century art: Start with the modern art galleries and work backwards.
Just 7 euros, and a 5-10 walk from the train station, you could tour this museum during a long train stopover. And you should if you’re a museum lover passing thru or staying in Stuttgart.

A large collection of paintings and sculptures - among which there are certainly several great masterpieces - even for ordinary art lovers. But not only that.
The Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, by architect James Stirling, is a masterpiece of postmodern architecture all over Germany.
The construction alone is worth a visit. The water feature in front of the building with its green, curved windows, the exterior and interior architecture, as well as the large, round courtyard.
Centrally located and easily accessible. Definitely worth a visit - for adults! Probably less suitable for children and adolescents.
There are always special exhibitions. Can be visited well in every season.

Just like Chicago the city of Stuttgart punches above its weight. All the "right" names and the selection of paintings... oh!!! This museum has an outstanding collection of paintings from 1500 to 1930. This is simply too much for a single day. We happened to visit on a Wednesday where most of the museum is free of charge. Lockers require € 1 coins. Make sure to have ticket sales tell you where to start, or you might end up in the sculpture garden.

This amazing museum provides you with the opportunity to explore hundreds and hundreds of art exhibits displaying some of the finest art from years gone by from different parts of Europe. The building can be a little tricky to navigate at times however there is a helpful guide on English and German to assist. There is a shop, lockers, cafe and much more. The Stuttgart card allows complimentary access to all parts of the buildings and is definitely worth buying. Neat door to this museum you’ll find another charming museum by the name of Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg.

We had less than two hours to spend in the Nationalgalerie which was nowhere near enough to see more than a fraction of what was available. We looked at some of the nineteenth and twentieth century art. Many of the big names of the are represented - paintings by Friedrich, Carus, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, Braque, Leger and many more grabbed my attention. If only we had had more time! We will go back when we are next in Stuttgart.
At the moment a lot of building work is being done around the main railway station in Stuttgart. Signs that appear to be directing you straight from the station to the Staatsgalerie are in fact taking you to the Staatsgalerie U-Bahn station from where the way to the gallery was not clear. The work is due to be completed in the next few months, I think.
One oddity of the museum is that visitors are not allowed to take any bags into the galleries, including ladies' handbags. There is a free cloakroom, though.

The museum boasted to have a big and interesting collection. This was certainly true, with many top-class paintings going from the gothic times to contemporary. Large rooms make it possible to see the wonders without being bothered by others.

I was impressed by their extensive collection of local artists' work, dating as far back to the 1300s. As well as more well-known artists from around the world (Picasso, Monet, Mondrian, Degas, Warhol, etc). The space is well maintained, with a few great story-board type spaces to discuss the impact of the National Socialist Party/ WWII on their collection and newly acquired works. The museum also has some quiet outdoor spaces with sculptures. Not a place for contemporary/modern art, with a handful of exceptions. I did not pay for the special exhibit, so I cannot comment.

I would definitely visit on a Wednesday because then the museum is free to enter. Only the special exhibitions still cost something. There is a lot to discover here, including famous works by painters such as Franz Marc and Dali. You can easily spend 45 minutes here. I also thought it was great that you were allowed to take photos everywhere.
