This museum of musical instruments is a real surprise and not to be missed in a visit to Stuttgart. It is free to go in and has a variety of different instruments on three floors, plus a fourth floor where you can try out some of the instruments yourself. I had a fantastic time there and the guide I spoke to was very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended!

Great building - looks original outside, bright, new and modern inside. We went to a concert here by Berlin 1800, not cheap, but worth it; just take care - the tickets suggest the Old Palace as the venue!
Instruments on display very good. But HdM is not open daily (funding?). we would have lked to explore more.
Easy to find - next to church.

The museum is small but interesting. It is right in the center of the city so it is easy to work into your itinerary. And it is free!

The Musical Instruments Museum a few meters walk from Schloss Platz, just beside Landesmuseum. It is located beside the Church in a rather nondescript building. Entry is free! The museum staff is very helpful and friendly. The gentleman suggested we first visit the 3rd floor where kids can try various musical instruments like guitar, piano , a punch bag Beethovan , a motion sensor which generates music as you move your hand.. our group of 4 kids enjoyed the time spent and after a good one hour, we visited the below two floors filled with interesting instruments as old as from 17th century.. mostly a decent collection of pianos from olden era but the Museum also houses Instruments like Sarangi from India, Chinese and Arabic Instruments.. A few gramophone with some from Edison's company ..evenif you do not know a great deal about music, it is fun to visit!
If you are shopping around and kids seem frustrated, bring them here and they will have great fun!

Anyone interested in musical instruments should visit this museum. We spent an interesting hour or so looking at the exhibits and there is a hands on area and you can try various things, my husband would have stayed all day. The museum is free which is a bonus and has very clean WCs which are also free, another bonus!

We were on holiday in Stuttgart and a trip down to Schillerplatz was alway's on the top of our list if place's to visit.
FRUCHTKASTEN is a superb looking building that is really eyecatching in an area with some outstanding architecture.
The building itself is a museum to music ( HAUS DER MUSIK ) and you can view some wonderful and unusual instrument's.
Well worth a visit to just look at the architecture but if you have an interest in music then it's a must go destination.
Easy to locate , jump the Ubahn down to Schloßplatz and head to the amazing Schillerplatz were you will find this great building and museum.

Being a member of the Wuerttemberg Museum in the Old Palace, or upon admission to it, you can also visit the Music Instrument Museum. Visitors are usually outnumbered by staff, and most times on my twice a year visits I was the only visitor. Take an elevator to the top floor and work your way down viewing the old instruments along the way. There are many piano and piano-like instruments, several floors of them including working models of the many ways the keys actuate the hammers on the strings. There are also some unusual pianos such as the double piano. On Fridays they used to have musical performances. Last visit was actually in Summer, 2012.

I can only speak as a musician, and as a person who seeks out musical instrument museums everywhere I go in Europe - this was a delightful museum! I was there practically on my own and felt free to take photos of the wonderful collection they have. If you are a pianist you might enjoy some very interesting pianos they have on display, including a Pleyel which is for two people (one person at each end!!) and some wonderfully decorated show pianos (have posted photos of my favorite, gorgeously decorated Art Nouveau one from 1900). I wonder why it was not more crowded - I encourage musicians and music lovers to visit here.

The museum is located in the heart of Stuttgart, in Schillerplatz, very close to Schlossplatz. It features a small but valuable collection of mostly European, but also non-European musical instruments from the 17-19th century. The collection of "unusual" instruments on the 3rd floor is also worth seeing and trying. Dedicated activities are available for children. The entrance is free and it includes an audio guide with recordings of music pieces played by various instruments on display, which is a nice touch. While all the information is in German only, a piece of paper with a summary in English is available at the reception. The museum staff speak English and they are eager to help and provide information in English, which I appreciated a lot. I liked the exhibits, the atmosphere and the interactive nature of the collection. Overall my visit was an hour well spent.
