For those staying in Garmisch- the Alpsptize is much closer, even walkable, than having to drive to Zugspitze. Great views of the valley and a really nice eatery at the top.

Not the highest spot in the Alps, but the availability of food, views, and cost make this a great day trip.

I took my 8 and 10 year old sons up the Alpspitz while spouse was in a conference. We had a great time. We rode up one cable car, then across on the next one to a spot where there is a cafe/restaurant, lounge chairs,...More

Our visit to Alpspitze definitely shaved a couple years off my life due to the wind. Our ride up via the Alpspitzbahn wasn't too bad, and offered better views than that of Zugspitze because it wasn't as crowded. However, the ride on Hochalmbahn (to get...More

I recently heard (Nov 2016) that climbing to the top of the Alpsitze is now restricted due to the number of hikers. Is this true? I've enjoyed three climbs to the top and hope that one can still make the climb to the very top.

When I was there in August there weren't any explicit restrictions in that regard. I didn't specifically ask about them either though. That being said, there was no one there to monitor whether you climbed to the upper... More

I do not believe there is any type of road heading to the Alpspitze viewing station. The Alpspitzebahn or hiking trails get you there. One of my favorite webcams is up there. If you have not checked them out, google... More

It's a very long up hill hike, about four hours up and about 3.5 down. All nature all the way so be prepared. You can Google average temperatures in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to help guide you.
