"Medieval" City Hall completed in 1909.
Germany survived the Middle Ages several times. The first time is real, not knowing that it was the Middle Ages (the term was invented by a professor from Halle, Christophor Keller). The second time it was invented by German romantics. but they did it in books. But in Bavaria it began to be known from the middle of the XIX century. For this, even a new style of "neo-Gothic" was invented. The new City Hall on Marienplatz is of the same category. Architect Hauberrisser can divide the City Hall into more average than average. After all, there were already cranes, elevators and other means of mechanization of construction. The City Hall was completed in 1909, when the era of aviation and dreadnoughts had already begun. In the "medieval" City Hall there is an elevator to the observation deck. Alas, the queue for it is long. The facade is decorated with ornaments and figures from Bavarian history. On the opening day of the City Hall, a bronze sculpture of Munchner Kindl is a character depicted on the coat of arms of Munich.

    Impressive Structure
The new Rathaus is the current seat of Munich's city government and has a commanding location in the Marienplatz. Constructed in the 1800s it has one of the most beautiful facades of any "city hall" in Western Europe. It is accentuated by the very tall tower/spire and the glockenspiel it contains. The ground floor is arcaded and contains shops and restaurants with the most famous the Rathskellar in the basement. Definitely a "must see" and would suggest taking a tour of the building.

    Old Looking New Town Hall
The construction of this beautiful building began in the late 19th century and continued into the early 20th century. The intricate detailing of the façade, with its pointed arches and ornate carvings, reflects the medieval influences that inspired its design. The New Town Hall serves as the seat of the city's government, housing administrative offices.

    City Hall
City hall building which makes up Marienplatz. You can walk into the courtyard area but beyond that it doesn't appear to be accessible unless on a special tour. Loads of history here. Best to read ahead before visiting.

    A must see in Munich
The New Town Hall is absolutely stunning! The architecture is incredibly detailed, and the Glockenspiel show is a fun highlight. Don’t miss the chance to take the elevator to the top for amazing views of Munich and the Alps. Located right in Marienplatz, it's easy to explore the area afterward. A true must-see when visiting Munich!

The main attraction of Marienplatz. Impossant - built in the Gothic Revival style. I only looked at it from the outside, but this impression is already incredible.
The 85 m high town hall tower is crowned by the Munich Kindl.
At the top of the tower is one of the largest carillon in Europe. The mechanical clock plays four different melodies one after the other on the hour. The melodies are changed throughout the year. A Munich night watchman who blows on his horn and an angel who blesses the Munich Kindl appear in the bay windows on the seventh floor of the tower.

Because of the small space it is better to take photos with a wide-angle lens!

The building is on Marienplatz, the main square of Munich. The area is a busy shopping district with wide pedestrian-only streets; really nice. The main attraction of this building is the glockenspiel, which puts on a show at 11:00 am and noon each day. It is a lot of fun to see.

This is a gorgeous building inside and out. I recommend viewing the exterior from both Marienplatz and the inner courtyard. From there, you can enter the building, which is open to the public as an active civic town hall. The interior hallways contain many interesting stained glass pieces that depict notable buildings and locations throughout Germany.

It costs 6€ to reserve a 15 minute visit to the observation deck of the tower. It is well worth the money and effort to book this in advance. You will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of all of Munich.

Finally, you will want to schedule your visit to view the Glockenspiel in action at either 11am or 12pm. The ~13 minute performance is quite amazing. See my review of that attraction as well.

The architecture of this building is so amazing. While there are tours available, just walking around it and into the courtyard makes this a lovely experience. While the Glockenspiel on the front of the building is its centerpiece, there are so many things to observe in and around the building. Take your time and soak it all in !

The most striking building on Marienplatz was completed in 1905. It was built in the Neo-Gothic architectural style.

The tower offers panoramic views of the city. Furthermore, the famous glockenspiel attracts huge crowds every day.

Over 600 city employees work in the 400 rooms of the building, which can be viewed not only from the outside.

The balcony is Munich's most popular place for sports teams to celebrate their wins. FC Bayern has been a regular guest in recent years, turning Marienplatz into a giant party zone.

The carillon is powered by solar energy. With its 43 bells, is the fifth largest in Europe. In total, all the bells weigh about seven tons.

When I was buying ticket for the tower in the new town hall, in the tourist center there were pictures of Munich Residenz, with the caption Rathaus, so it was a misleading advert for the new town hall tour. Guide was OK, but there was nothing special about this tour, not much history or interesting tales. You can enter the town hall on your own and walk the hallways, it is free for public. Famous library is also public, but just beware it is open from Monday to Friday. This tour is not worth 20 euros per person.

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich and the must go place but one of the reasons it became a must go place is the palace of the city hall
The New City hall was built in last decades of the 1800's , in several sections in the neo-gothic architectural style. The building itself its huge, in the basement you shall find the Ratskeller restaurant - a very good place to eat something good.
In the City hall itself on the ground floor there are several small shops and a part of the building can be visited.
The clock chime or the Glockenspiel is also one of the attractions - I was not lucky to be there in time for that ..., yet , maybe next time.
Overall a definite eyecatcher and a place well worth checking out , I recommend you include it in your Munich tour when you are there , it is a must see.

Terrible signage - you are directed to the stairs to get to the 4th floor, but when we get to the 4th floor the door is locked. Head back down to the lower floor to find the lift. Lift arrives with two staff members who push my son out. Terrible attitude and behaviour by staff, when I asked why the door was locked the attendant to scan tickets just shrugged and said “go”. Nice view, but with crap like that its not worth the hassle as far as I’m concerned.Better to spend time elsewhere.

We were in Marienplatz battling with the substantial crowds and noticed a door into the Rathaus. Being nosy, we wandered in. There seemed to be nobody controlling entrance, nor any signs limiting access, so we continued to wander around, upstairs, along corridors, peering into rooms, often without sight nor sound of anyone else. It was really, really interesting, if a little surreal. Definitely one of our more memorable experiences in Munich, and recommended.

The imposing New Town Hall building was built in the second half of the nineteenth century in neo-Gothic style and represents the most iconic and representative building in the city. Overlooking the central Marienplatz, you can admire the elaborate decorations of its façade, the high clock tower and the famous carillon which is activated at certain times of the day. It is possible to freely access the internal courtyards and for a fee climb to the top of the tower.
