The history of Nuremberg's rock-cut cellarsSouthern Germany's biggest rock-cut cellar mazeThrough many centuries, the citizens of Nuremberg have built vaults and corridors into the bright red sandstone below their city. In 1380, the widespread cellar system was mentioned in a document for the first time. In all those years, the cellars were primarily used for the ripening and storage of beer – mostly the city's famous red beer.Today, the craft brewery Hausbrauerei Altstadthof again uses a small part of the widespread maze-like cellar system to ripen and store specialty beers and beer schnaps.Of course, visiting the craft brewery and the whisky distillery will be part of the tours. Afterwards, there will be time to taste the local specialties in the brewery tavern. Just come around, it is worth a visit!

An alternative way to learn about German life! An interesting way through subterranean Nuremburg! Our guide was very informative and made the tour interesting for us to enjoy every minute of it! An ideal option for those rainy days!

Learnt a lot about the practices in brewing beer, Bavarian life in the past and even the history of some pickle company in the cellar. Had the opportunity for free tasting of brewery selection after too. Highly recommend and worth the 6€. English tour Sunday at 11.30 only.

We booked this tour through the Tourist Info Centre. The starting point for the tour wasn't particularly easy to find even with the map, but by asking local shopkeepers we got there. The tour was in German but we were provided with an English language audio guide (2 out of 3 audio guides lasted for the length of the tour).... More

This is a fascinating subterranean way to see Nuremberg. Beneath the stable Triassic sandstone streets of Nuremberg, are hidden extensive complexes of cellars. In some cases, the cellars are up to four storeys deep. The original use of these cellars was to store beer. During World War II, many Nuremberg citizens sound shelter in these cellars. The tours for individual... More

A labyrinth of tunnels carved out of the Rock on which Nuremberg sits for storing beer sounds ridiculous - but it is true! The tunnels are actually not that impressive but the effort to create and adapt them is. The history and information provided is quite interesting, our guide Michaela was very helpful. The tour starts in the street and... More

Very interesting, nice tour guide .. worth the money, although it is not very expensive. Would have loved to see some more ... Time went by to fast ... Tried the whiskey - great! - The "Rotbier" (red-beer) isn't my kind of taste but for a glass I'll take one :)

We took the Red Beer tour which begins and ends with beer sample. There are no English tours for this particular tour, but there are audio guides available. The tour was interesting, but I felt like we missed a lot with the audio guide. The tour was about 75 min long, but we could have gotten through it in 20... More

I know that the Germans take their beer seriously & these tunnels prove it. Was great to hear all what went on under the city of Nürnberg. The tour was done in English & the guide was very personable.

My son and I took the tour of the beer cellars. It was a very interesting trip into history. I recommend taking the tour.

As English speaking tours are only on Sunday's, we joined a German speaking tour with audio guide and - wow, we had a great time. Our guide, Hans occasionally added to our audio with bilingual "extras" as we travelled 4 levels underground through the history of the cellar use. And we ended with a brief rundown of modern day brewing... More
