    Nuremberg Cathedral
Church symbol of the city of Nuremberg. Stunning example of Romanesque Gothic. Full of ideas and wonderful works such as the frame suspended on the wooden altar and the side altars. To see and discover in every detail

    Must see church in Nuremberg
Very beautiful church. Lovely art. Gothic excellence. Lovely sculptures: I loved the angels located everywhere in the church and the 3D retables, the faces of the Saints, in contrast with the harsh severity of walls and floor. I got into this church almost by chance, and was extremely glad as I would have otherwise missed something precious.

    St. Lorenz, or Lorenzkirche
This is the largest church in Nuremberg and is a twin-towered 14th-century Gothic church. The church is filled with many works of art which have been donated by the richer classes over centuries. Be sure to see the unique three-part organ boasting over 12,000 pipes, which is said to be one of the largest such instruments in the world.

Treasure filled Gothic church in Nuremburg
We spent a handful of nights in Nuremberg this past December and enjoyed visiting a handful of churches around the city including St. Lorenz located along Konigstrasse at Lorenzerplatz. The church is open from 9am to 5.30pm (Mon to Sat) and 1pm to 3.30pm (Sun). Entry is free but there is a suggested donation of €2 per person. It is a fine church worth 20-30 minutes to walk around and enjoy. St. Lawrence was mostly constructed during the 14th and 15th centuries and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Originally a Roman Catholic Church, St. Lawrence converted to Lutheran around 1525. Interestingly, many of the earlier church treasures were spared during the Reformation Period, thus we find the interior rich with fine chapels, altarpieces, sculptures and artworks. The hanging 'Angelic Salutation' by Veit Stoss (1518) and the delicately carved sandstone Tabernacle by Adam Kraft (1496) near the front of pillar of the choir is remarkable. The church also possesses the largest church organ in Germany. The exterior of St. Lawrence is impressive as well. The facade features a niche portal, rose window and two bell towers, mirroring St. Sebald Church on the other side of the River Pegnitz. At times of the day, you will hear the bells of St. Lorenz playing if you are on the nearby streets outside the church. A quick walk around St. Lorenzplatz on the sides allows you to view the main body as well as a couple of fountain monuments placed around St. Lorenz.

A very pretty place and interesting places to stop by. The church and castle were worth seeing- castle is up a slight hill but all walkable areas.
It did rain on my visit day but still
A manged to have a nice afternoon.
I took a guided day trip from Munich but unless you really want a guided tour it is something you can do independently.
Bit your train tickets in advance and most of the area is walkable and it will make a pleasant day out of city of Munich- all near Nuremberg station and will be cheaper than the guided tour from Munich.

This church, built in 1250 in Gothic style, started to serve as a Protestant church in the early 1500s. The church has the largest organ in Germany. Not much can be said for the magnificence of the columns inside. It is so beautiful. 800,000 Euros were needed for the annual maintenance of the church. A donation of 2 Euros is expected from visitors, but this fee is not mandatory. Entrance to the church is free.

The Church of San Lorenzo is the most important religious building in Nuremberg. Its construction began in the 13th century and the work continued for more than two centuries before the work was completed. It is an imposing building in classic Gothic style which also deserves to be visited inside for the value of the decorations and artistic, pictorial and sculptural works it houses. Entrance is free, a donation of at least €2 is suggested. The visit is almost a must.

This has remained one of my favorite churches for 30 years. Each time I visit it, I am struck by the amount of carved altarpieces and other artwork contained in one place. And there's that amazing tabernacle by Adam Kraft that includes his self-portrait at the base, and the Angelic Greeting by Veit Stoss. The organ is also one of the largest in the world.

This lovely church sits downtown in central Nuremberg. The interior is filled with important artwork, each piece worth examining on its own merits. Hanging over the altar is the beautiful wood carving of the Annunciation by Veit Stoss--one of his masterpieces. Another work of interest is the gigantic house of sacraments, held up by a picture of the artist, Adam Kraft, who is crouching below the marble structure. Doubtless you will find other marvels to behold.

You are spoiled for choice in Nuremberg for amazing buildings but this one was easily our favourite.

It stands in the centre of town we wouldn’t normally go into such a place but we did on this occasion. It is here you appreciate the full extent of its beauty.

Even though badly damaged during the Second World War by bombers it has been thoughtfully restored and takes your breath away. One can only imagine what it is like when it is full and the service is going on as it was incredible just with a handful of tourists inside.

Definitely one for your list if you visit.

A fine Gothic cathedral. While it's interior might offer nothing particularly unusual if you've visited your fair share of these behemoths, the exterior is outstanding with two matching spires and a lovely rose window dominating the walk up the main shopping street. One of two superb churches in the old part of Nuremberg.

St. Lorenz is one of the very best attractions we visited during our recent stay in Nuremburg. It is located at Lorenzer Platz south of the Pegnitz. Opening hours are 9am to 5.30pm most days with extended hours on Thursday evening and reduced hours on Sundays.

Note: There is a 2 euro suggested donation per visitor and a brochure you can pick up which explains church highlights and shows you where to find them within the church.

Historically, the church dates back to the mid 13th-century and is Gothic in architecture. The facade is attractive, featuring a nice portal, rose window and two bell towers. We very much enjoyed listening to the bells while standing outside St. Lorenz on a couple of occasions. While the exterior is nice to see, it is the interior that is most impressive.

The interior offers a tall nave with ceiling vaults. There are numerous historic sculptures, wood carvings and artworks found throughout. We very much enjoyed seeing the Annunciation by Veit Stross (1518) as well as the delicately carved sandstone Tabernacle by Adam Kraft (1496). This was a real delight to view. Similarly, it is worth finding the Krell Altar piece in the back of the church. This is supposedly the oldest surviving detailed depiction of the walled city of Nuremburg.

In the end, we very much enjoyed our visit to St. Lorenz Church. It is a fine church to visit and a good complement to St. Sebaldus Church on the other side of the Pegnitz River. Together, they make for excellent church sightseeing in Nuremburg.

St. Lorenz Church is an excellent example of gothic architecture and is a very beautiful church. The carvings throughout the church are not to be believed and the windows are simply stunning. Definitely a must see when in Nuremberg

Although this 14th Century Gothic masterpiece was heavily damaged by bombing during the Second World War, international contributions, particularly from American John Kress, whose ancestor had been a pastor there, funded stabilization of surviving parts and restoration of damaged sections. Despite having been Protestant since the Reformation, the church looked very Catholic, partly because it housed a number of fine Medieval altarpieces from secularized convents and monasteries. The intense colors and background details made these more interesting aesthetically than they were as mere reflections of New Testament stories. The clothing, armor, horse tack, furnishings and other elements reflected the styles of the 15th Century, rather than Roman times.
