You really need A LOT of time to do this museum justice - there are so many exhibits to take in and see. Gave an insight of how people tried to cross the Berlin Wall. There was a lot of repetition in the exhibits. Some ingenious methods of escaping East Berlin were displayed. I am sure that you could read... More

Pros: amazing stories of escape and human ingenuity in finding ways to do so. Personal favourite was seeing the actual hot air balloon used by the families who escaped from East to West. Cons: poorly maintained throughout, bizarre layout as displays are non chronological which is really confusing. TONS to read, no interactivity at all so no good for young... More

This museum follows the history of the Berlin Wall from the causes of its construction to its destruction. Designed to cover various aspects of the wall history from art to anecdotes to artefacts .... there's a lot of info and it can be a bit overwhelming as not always clearly presented. Apart from that we enjoyed it and learned lots... More

There is a lot of information to read but also a lot to see. It was interesting to see what people used to try to escape. Tastefully done.

The Mauermuseum is an important part of every tourists itinerary! I have been there with my daughters who were so astonished and also perplexed ! The museum meanders a bit between a few buildings but keeps you enthralled with the history of the Berlin Wall and of course, the many attempts to escape to freedom ! Without giving anything away... Berlin is a spectacular city, my nine year old son is homeschooled and learned about the wall, communism, Hitler's reign and many other interesting facts about Berlin, Germany. It wasn't all educational, we also spent a day at the Mall of Berlin and I must say it is a pretty amazing place to shop. People in Berlin are very friendly... More

It's a nice 2 hour spent in the evening before my train when all other museums are closed. Perfect if you love reading, else it may seem boring. Lots of info on the wall itself, escape stories, NATO, etc. A little pricy (9.5 euro with student discount, not covered by museum pass), and although I didn't use it I don't... More

This museum is huge. It covers the history around the wall, but also other topics, such as other human rights efforts (e.g. Martin Luther King, Ghandi) and other World War II topics, such as Raoul Wallenberg saving the Jews of Budapest. Surprisingly, there isn't a lot of information about building the wall itself. There are excellent displays on how some... More

Staying in Kreuzberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Kreuzberg
Berlin's revolutionary heart and immigrant roots can both be found in Kreuzberg, but this central neighbourhood is beginning a new chapter. In the 1950s and '60s, Turkish guest workers settled around Kottbusser Tor, while in the 1980s and '90s, rambunctious squatters and artists gathered to live a carefree life here. An old hospital even became a hotspot of riots between squatters and police. Today you can still find the best kebabs in town and many underground clubs, but a lot has changed as well. The hospital has been transformed into an art center, and increasingly you will find new urban cafés, restaurants and designer shops. Rising housing prices and gentrification threaten the spirit of this area along the Spree River, but the neighbourhood’s legacy is upheld by a very engaged community fighting to preserve its rebellious identity.
