This July my partner and I were turned onto the tour group, Alternative tours. We had no idea what we were in for. This was my first time in Berlin. We met Reetta at the TV tower and went on a street art tour- it was absolutely amazing. It was something that I wouldn’t ever think about looking up. That... More

Very recommended free tour, which you will decide to give or not a tip. (we gave it with pleasure). Very interesting non touristic spots and subculture stories, and Berlinese street art scene. Our guide Daniel was very addictive. Great job guys.

Jake was just excellent! in every aspect of the tour, starting with thorough coverage of many "alternative" aspects of Berlin, through spicing the tour with personal stories and his own perspective. 3.5 hours of intense experience. Multi dimensional, touching on street art, history, graffiti, politics, ...; we had a great time we'll come again. Absolutely recommend the tour with Jake!

She's knowledgeable, passionate, and has a way of making people feel engaged & curious about Berlin's incredible history of alternative culture. 5/5, would recommend to everyone!

Our friends recommended that we give this tour a go and Jake was a really dynamic and carasmatic tour guide who shared his creative, historical and political knowledge of the city with us. I would really recommend any visitors of this diverse city to get involved!

Really great tour of the lesser known sights in Berlin, checking out street art, hidden alleys and museums, galleries and eateries. Was a great way to familiarize yourself with the city before exploring solo. Stefan was a great guide and would recommend this to anyone. Bring gloves and scarf during winter though!

Alternative Berlin tours are a great way to learn about the current culture of Berlin, as well as some lesser known insight into historical Berlin that you won't get on your standard city tour. Really cool to know the meaning behind the graffiti and street art you see all around the city. Dave was our guide. He was very friendly... More

Jonathan (British ex-pat) was a great tour guide. Very fun, very warm. After the tour, I couldn't stop noticing tags from different graffiti groups painted across Berlin.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
