Even after ninety years the most significant show aquarium in Germany is still a Mecca of biodiversity and history for aquarium and terrarium fans.

Since it opened its doors for the very first time the three storeys of Zoo-Aquarium have been presenting a section through the classes of fish, lower animals, reptiles, amphibians, and articulates around its heart, the Crocodile Hall, at that time the world's first walk-in animal enclosure for visitors.

Number of animals and species

With the largest number of species of its kind this building provides terrariums and aquariums for over 9,000 animals of almost 800 species. Today everyone talks about biodiversity. Here at Zoo-Aquarium you can experience it.

There are a few floors in the aquarium with the fish segregated by region. The fish are excellent. There are three floors of reptiles and insects as well. There is a cafe there but didn't try the food. Don't go to the bathroom as you can imagine what it would be like with kids coming and going all day. Worth... More

The aquarium of Berlin has lots and lots of different species from all over the world. And when you are totally exhausted then there's an other floor... We spent 5 hours here and did not see everything. It is quite impressive and they have lots of rare animals that you don't get to see any place else.

My son loves aquarium's so wherever we go we tend to end up visiting one, this one blew all the past ones out of the water (no pun intended). This is over 3 floors, and has a vast range of animals. The tanks on the lower floors where not as full as some aquariums, this was not an issue we... More

Aquarium is one of the best that I've seen over three floor there is a lift but states for wheel chair users and buggies it's also more than just fish with reptiles spiders and bug. Also a hot house with crocodiles. Can be expensive if just going in the aquarium but if you go to the zoo as well it's... More

Aquariums don't come much better than this. Some tanks the size of small houses, all cunningly lit to show the fish and corals to best advantage, stunning arrays of fish, and some very surprising ones too. Then there are the amphibians, crocs, frogs, iguanas and the like. And then a fascinating insect section - don't miss the leaf-cutter ants scurrying... More

We planned morning visit to zoo and aquarium, and we were at 9 at the gates. Fortunately we started with aquarium because all the animals weren't up yet, and it was great decision. Not as big as Barcelona's aquarium, but not any less good- great selection of fish, reptiles and insects.

Staying in Charlottenburg

Neighbourhood Profile
Charlottenburg
Breathe in Berlin’s royal past while walking through the gardens of beautiful Charlottenburg Palace, which lends its name to this well-heeled neighbourhood. Here you'll find some of the oldest homes in the city: upper-class apartment buildings with ornate facades and marble-floored foyers line the cobblestone streets. Stroll by sophisticated restaurants, through little parks, or around Lake Lietzensee. Window shop down Kurfürstendamm, the most renowned high-end shopping street in Berlin, where you can find all the big designer names. In the evening, visit one of the old theatres close by Zoo Station which were nightlife hot spots in the 1920s, or dine in one of the many international restaurants around Savignyplatz before heading to other parts of town for a night out.
