Starting and ending at Nollendorfplatz, this 90-minute tour visits the neighbourhood British writer Christopher Isherwood lived in during his time in Berlin in the last years of the Weimar Republic and where he wrote his famous Berlin diaries, which were to become the iconic film & stage musical, Cabaret. The walk includes readings from his novels and diaries and takes in the sights he wrote about and the cafes, bars and clubs he frequented. Taste the city as he saw it in those uncertain times, where Cabaret was born, genders were blurred and a film premiere caused riots! Tours are usually on Saturday at 11am, but other times are available by arrangement.

We recently took this tour with Brendan. It was a bitterly cold and rainy day in Berlin, yet the tour was so interesting that it kept our attention off of the weather. Brendan had a lot of pictures of people and places involved in Isherwood's...More

Brendan provided a well-researched, fascinating history of Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s, charting the rise of Nazism as seen in this district of Berlin. He also knows the area is depth, and pointed out many other interesting aspects - the "Stolpersteine", for example, and...More

Brendan's research and beautifully honed talk is a lesson very well worth having. Given that Isherwood, Auden, Spender and others are a central part of English literature of their time, it is difficult to believe that this tour would not be the natural choice of...More

I've always been wary of walking tours as there can be a risk the tour guides charisma and passion may seem routine and bland. I had been recommended this tour by a friend and it did not disappoint. Brendan's passion and personality were perfectly pitched...More

This really is an excellent tour for anyone with an interest in Berlin's turbulent and hedonistic history. Brendan packs so much interesting information into the tour - about politics, the wild nightlife in the 20s and of course the life and times of Isherwood himself....More

Undoubtedly the best tour I have ever been on. Brendan brought to life Christopher Isherwood's time in Berlin: how his experiences and the people he interacted with became the characters we know through Isherwood's novels and "Cabaret" Even more fascinating is how Brendan recreates the...More

In 1963, Schöneberg was the centre of the political
west, inspiring John F. Kennedy to choose this area to
famously announce, "Ich bin ein Berliner." Times may
have changed, but modern-day Schöneberg still pays
tribute to its historical legacies. Once the richest
city outside of Berlin proper, the area's affluent
past is still visible in ornate housing facades dating
back to the Gründerzeit of the 19th century, while
