Starting and ending at Nollendorfplatz, this 90-minute tour visits the neighbourhood British writer Christopher Isherwood lived in during his time in Berlin in the last years of the Weimar Republic and where he wrote his famous Berlin diaries, which were to become the iconic film & stage musical, Cabaret. The walk includes readings from his novels and diaries and takes in the sights he wrote about and the cafes, bars and clubs he frequented. Taste the city as he saw it in those uncertain times, where Cabaret was born, genders were blurred and a film premiere caused riots! Tours are usually on Saturday at 11am, but other times are available by arrangement.

Brendan is super well-informed about the life and work of Christopher Isherwood. He provides excellent historical and geographical context, bringing alive the Nollendorfplatz area through compelling narration and poignant quotes. Despite the changing neighborhood, Brendan recreates an authentic image of Berlin at the end of the Weimar Republic as World War II begins.

Brendan is a passionate guide, as keen to share as he is to inform. He brings Isherwood's world vividly to life and skilfully weaves in modern references and quirky detail.

I really enjoyed the tour. Brendan brought Isherwood's Berlin back to life and his passion is infectious - can't wait to discover more about Isherwood and early 20thc. Berlin (especially gay Berlin and cabaret!)

I came to Berlin in search of Sally Bowles' world in Cabaret, unfortunately, there isn't much of it left as much of Berlin has been destroyed by the war. Glad I was able to catch this walking tour, it's a must for 'Cabaret' fans. Brendan is very knowledgeable on Christopher Isherwood, first stop of the tour would be his apartment,... More

Brendan provides a terrific tour of Christopher Isherwood's neighborhood. As a person who is fascinated by Isherwood's Berlin life, and friends with Isherwood's life partner (Don Bachardy), I can tell you that Brendan is very knowledgeable about the subject and area. Brendan provides many interesting details about the life and neighborhood of Christopher Isherwood and his associates in Weimar Berlin.... More

The tour really brought that part of Berlin to life. It worked if you knew a lot about Isherwood - but it also worked if, like me, your knowledge was a bit sketchy. It was a fantastic tour.

Isherwood Neighborhood's walking tour was amazing. Of course I am a fan of the Weimar era and Isherwood's Goodbye To Berlin but even if I wasn't I would have been as thrilled the same way. Brendan's knowledge is astonishing and the way he was telling the Story corresponding to each spot of the tour was absolutely gripping. I highly recommend... More

My mother, daughter and I were in Berlin at the end of August. I'd already done the Isherwood walking tour and loved it (see the previous review) and returned with two people with very different learning needs and styles. Would they enjoy it? Would I be regretting returning to do the same thing 12 months later? The answer was an... More

So great to be in the presence of an historian so passionate about the subject! Learned so much about pre-WWII Berlin and its gay history. Would definitely recommend.

Staying in Schoneberg

Neighbourhood Profile
In 1963, Schöneberg was the centre of the political west, inspiring John F. Kennedy to choose this area to famously announce, "Ich bin ein Berliner." Times may have changed, but modern-day Schöneberg still pays tribute to its historical legacies. Once the richest city outside of Berlin proper, the area's affluent past is still visible in ornate housing facades dating back to the Gründerzeit of the 19th century, while residents in fur coats walking their dogs or shopping in high-end KaDeWe continue the tradition with a modern flair. Schöneberg was also once the centre of the decadent and burlesque nightlife of the 1920s. It was here that Marlene Dietrich partied with Christopher Isherwood and the first gay bar in Germany was founded. Today, the gay community still revolves around Nollendorfplatz. The overground Ubahn station is even illuminated in rainbow colors, paying tribute to Schöneberg's progressive past.
