Berlin Wall Watchtower at Potsdamer Platz The "BT 6" tower, introduced in 1966, permitted panoramic surveillance. There were more than 200 towers of this type deployed along the border line surrounding West Berlin. The gunports were covered by heavy metal shutters that were pulled up for shooting. The solid construction was meant to protect the soldiers from fire originating from the potential enemy in the West. The cabin on top of the tower was manned around the clock: One surveyed the approaches from the GDR ("friendly") side, the other kept his attention on the "enemy"- side. This is the only preserved example of this type of watchtower. And the oldest relict of the Berlin wall. We have started a private initiative and have taken over this authentic relic from the City of Berlin. The purchase of your ticket or a donation will help us to restore this document of a bygone era further and assure its upkeep in the future.

This needs to be more publicly advertised and signposted. It is worth a visit to appreciate its part in the history of this city

Located off Potsdamer Platz on a quiet street, I did not see any signs to acknowledge the tower; they have built around the tower, which I feel is a disappointing due to the history behind it. On the day I went it a bit muggy...More

Truth be told, nothing special. GDR Watchtower is nothing more than a ordinary watchtower, one of many Berlin had.

Had it not been mentioned in the LP guidebook, we would never have found this luttle gem. An interesting spot that tells the story of an era that is very important.

Tucked away on a side street, it would be easy to miss unless you're looking for it. Very low key, it was staffed this day by a very friendly man who is a native Berliner and former teacher at an American school. While the tower...More

This unknown little piece of history is tucked away down a side street, we found it by chance, and am so glad we did. We were greeted by a very friendly guide who talked us through the history of the tower, how it was used,...More

Entrance by voluntary contribution. It's only a short ladder climb but maybe not for those not great with heights. Definitely worth the effort to get a view a guards perspective. Good that this has been looked after so future generations will be able to see...More

The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights
like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum
Island. The central location makes this one of the
city's most expensive places to live. It is here the
oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence
of some significant transformations, as well. The
gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets
between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given
