I've been to two operas here, Don Carlo and The Magic Flute. The scenery can be quite minimalistic, and they tend to mix modern and traditional together with costumes, dialogue etc. They also include the audience in scenes, and in the case of Don Carlo, used the entire building during the second act! If you are into traditional Opera, the... More

This was a surprise treat from my husband and I was delighted. The opera was la Boheme and musicality was seriously high and the orchestra incredible. The opera house itself is really modern and everything seemed fairly well organised, it was easy to get drinks, find you seat etc. Everything sounded great and stage views clear with some great scenery.... Saw a modern ballet piece and Rigoletto here during a short business trip here. Both are great productions, but beware that the audience is quite senior (>75). Flirting is hard during intermissions.

I went to see the "magic flute" from Mozart. They used video and modern lighting which was very surprising. Good to see them taking risks even if sometimes the singers are not put enough in center stage. Both the outside of opera and the room inside are not well decorated, but the seats are very very comfortable.

We spent a week in Hamburg in early June and managed to see several operas while there. The performances by the singers were first rate, the performance by the orchestra was (unfortunately) third rate and the opera house management did their best to ruin the good spirits by the action of staff members at the end of the evening. The... More

To rate an Opera House or a Theater is very difficult. But let me try. I am a regular visitor of the Hamburgische Staatsoper since 1988 and I have seen great productions but also very few not worth the entrance ticket. The program of this opera house is very interesting and diversified. And the "Philharmonisches Staatsorchester" is one of the... More

I had a great (even though with almost 4 hours rather long) evening at the Staatsoper. "Les Troyens" was well done and most of the singers brilliant. The house itself is not very attractive, nothing like other opera houses in Europe. Really nice: they give the pretzels they couldn't sell in the break away for free at the end of... More

Spring 2015 we were 4 friends on a trip to Hamburg. We have all been there before. We wanted to go to the Opera because we hoped that would be a great adventure. Well, is wasn´t what we had hoped for the "La Traviatta". Especially because of the decoration of the visual art on the scenery, which took the interest... More

Following an air raid in the second world war, this house had to be re-built. It now looks and feels newer than it is. Not big, with a capacity around 1700, we found it to have very comfortable seats and the bar was very close at hand at the interval. They put on a wide variety of opera, ballet and... More
