About
The SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT is one of most important exhibition venues in Europe. Since opening in 1986, it has presented more than 240 exhibitions on around 2,000 m² of floor space and can boast a total of more than 8.8 million visitors. The SCHIRN focuses on art-historical and historico-cultural themes, discourses, and trends from a contemporary perspective. Its range of offers is multifaceted, international, and progressive; it attempts to open up new points of view and to break open traditional patterns of reception. The exhibitions are devoted in equal measure to contemporary stances in art and art of the modern era.

Schirn presents great stuff but the museum itself is no fun at all. It’s like they don’t really want you to be there. They have a little table for a museum shop and closed it 5 hours before the museum closes. The staff for the most part are unfriendly. Traffic is poorly organised. I hate going there but tolerate it to see the art. Talk about besucherunfreundlich!

We are a well travelled and cultured couple with eclectic tastes and open minds. We relish the opportunity to be challenged by art exhibitions and nudged out of our comfort zones. Modern art has a lot to offer and we applaud any exponent who can make us think. However, we recently went to the 'Peace' exhibition at Schirn Kunsthalle and were appalled. The public relies on museum directors to sort the wheat from the chaff but with this exhibition they got it horribly wrong. This exhibition has nothing to do with "How Peace Works" - in fact, it made us rather angry. Paying 9 Euros a ticket for the whole gallery would be fine - as you take the good with the bad in any museum - but 9 Euros for one exhibition which consisted of 5 rooms of complete rubbish is unacceptable. We won't be returning.

Four of us drove for two hours to visit the Edvard Munch exhibition. Two of us like Munch quite a bit and two were open to the experience. Each of us has lots of museum experiences. None was satisfied with the large exhibit. First, the museum is badly designed for its purpose. The rooms are arranged like a rabbit warren. They are small, narrow and not suited anything but a few visitors at a time. This exhibit drew more people than the facility can hold. People were constantly in one another's way and colliding. The written descriptions were small and difficult to read. The selection and placement of the art works was ill conceived. They were packed together and there was insufficient space to take them in. The two of us who entered as Munch enthusiasts left with the feeling that the artist was much less appealing than we had thought. That is a failure for an exhibition. We will avoid this museum in the future. To top it off, the exhibition was over-priced.

There is no permanent collection so check the website for current exhibitions. You can visit one of the two exhibition or ask for a combined ticket for 18€. The best way is to buy the Frankfurt card that gives you 50% discount on entrance + public transport.
Both Infinite Jest & Paparazzi exhibitions were to our taste and we spent more than 2 hours without noticing.
Please note that taking pictures for private use is possible and free but only possible if you sign a document - ask at the entrance.

Went to see Munch and Condo at Schirn Kunsthalle and while the collection of Munch's artwork itself is impressive, the gallery was crowded, the tickets were expensive and the staff looked rather unwelcoming.

This museum has no permanent collection. Instead, there are 3-4 different exhibitions at a time. We chose to see one of them and we were amazed. It was really brilliant. Everything else, apart from the art itself, wasn't so good. All of the staff, from the entrance onwards, were really unfriendly and sometimes even rude. As if they didn't actually want you there. That was really unprofessional, but if you like contemporary art, this place is a must.

Magnetic North and Gilbert & George are the current exhibitions at Schirn...while the first was nice and and very aesthetically “correct” (a little too much for my taste), the second was *SO* incorrect (politically, aesthetically, etc.)...it was just f-awesome. And the “dot on the i” was the floor walls in the inner building “cilinder” displaying the best collection of phrases using the f-word I have ever seen. Made my day...

I was there for the John M Armleder and Big Orchestra exhibits. I haven't always been a contemporary art person, but this space makes the experience more immersive than the average gallery. You can view the works from all directions and the bright natural light illuminates everything. I got some great photos combining different pieces. The Big Orchestra apparently holds live performances using the art works, which are all musical instruments or written music that can be played in some way. There was a family with children who seemed to be having fun and were not bored at all.

At the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main, a really impressive artist is on show and his exhibition is unmissable: Jean-Michel Basquiat and his "Boom for Real". The gallery is in the heart of Frankfurt, at Römerberg, a lovely square lined with old and picturesque timber-framed houses and buildings, and to complete your day, after or before the show, you can also take the chance to have a quick brunch in one of the many beer gardens around it. Especially on a lovely sunny day. In the gallery, paintings, drawings, decorated objects, collages and sketches well illustrate the originality and uniqueness of this Brooklyn-born talent, one of the most acclaimed contemporary artist of his generation. I also suggest visiting the other exhibition which is currently on at the Schirn, "Power to the People", where rooms and walls are full of contemporary objects and unusual artworks, all inspired by the ideals of Democracy, Freedom and Equality, in gender, religion and race. You can see whatever, from a long wall decorated in vinyls to a pirate ship dedicated to women and their long and endless fight for equality. If you buy both tickets, there's a special admission fee of only € 17. Coat check service is included and efficient, and you have to leave any bag of yours there, before starting your visit. Have a nice day!

I had the opportunity to see several outstanding art exhibitions this past year. "Splendor and Misery in the Weimar Republic", currently at the Schirn Kunsthalle, was right up at the top.

The thematic exhibition features around 200 works by some of Germany's most famous artists, done between the two World Wars, 1918 - 1933. Arranged by theme, the works on display deal with the political and social climate during the Weimar Repbulic. The after effects of World War One, political unrest, prostitution, the new woman, entertainment and paragraphs 175 and 218 are some of the themes that makeup this powerful exhibition.

Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmüller, George Grosz, Lea Grundig, Christian Schad and Georg Scholz are just a few of the artists represented.

"Splendor and Misery in the Weimar Republic" is one of those exhibitions that really draws you in and makes you think. I like art that has that kind of power and emotion about it.

Highly recommended!

A hardbound exhibition catalog in both German and English is available in the gift shop, for a very reasonable price.

The Schirn is located by the “Dom/Römer” subway. If your in Frankfurt for a few days and enjoy museums, I recommend getting a museum pass at the tourist office for 18 euros. Well worth the money.
