The beautiful tower, originally 20 meters high, was built in the year 788 by order of Charlemagne. In the fourteenth century the tower was raised by approximately 14 meters. The tower was part of the town hall. It is the oldest building in Aachen.

The Granusturm is a tower that was originally built as part of the imperial palaces of Charlemagne. No one really knows what was the original purpose of the tower. There's a shrine on the outside of the tower on Markt street with a wooden sculpture of Christ on a cross.
It's just a tower. Nothing to get excited about.

The tower was built at the end of the 8th century during the reign of Charlemagne who succeeded in uniting large parts of Europe. Only the four lower floors are 8th century. Floors 5 and 6 were added in the 14th century, the topmost part in 1979.
The tower is named after Granus Serenus (brother of the Roman emperor Nero) as during the Renaissance historians mistakingly thought the tower was built during Roman times.
For reasons of conservation the tower is not open to the public.

The Granusturm (Granus Tower) was built in the late 8th century as a part of the former royal palace of king Charles The Great.
The Granus Tower is the only remaining part of this palace and is now a part of the 14th centuryTown Hall at the Market Square in the city centre.
During the construction of the town hall, the tower was raised with the pointed roof construction.
From historical point of view , the tower should deserve the rating 'excellent'.
However, the tower is not open for public.
And the architecture of 20th century adjacent building is, in my opinion, an insult to the historical value of the tower.

Around the year 800 Charlemagne, King and emperor of the Frankonian empire decided to live in Aachen. Here he built his castle and his Cathedral. Nowadays the castle is the cityhall. Most parts of it were renovated during the centuries, but Granusturm still is the Original part. Do combine your visit here with the Cathedral, the treasury and the cityhall, inside and outside. Aachens city centre is small, so you can do a lot in one day.

This is the oldest building in Aachen, built in 788, and it dates from the time of Charlemagne. Later it became part of the town hall and the tower is raised slightly.
However, the tower still shows its age. It is located directly at one of the shopping Streets.

The Granusturm was originally built as part of the imperial palace of Charlemagne. The tower is approximately 20 meters high, made of quarry stone, was completed in 788 AD. The sides of the square building measure 8.85 meters. The Granusturm is one of the two Aachen city hall towers and name is thought to have come from the legendary city founder Granus Serenus, a legendary brother of the Roman emperor Nero. TThroughout its history, the tower has been rebuilt several times: it housed the Tower Guard's apartment, the city's document archive, and a jail. Today the tower is empty and is not open to the public. Allow for ~15 minute for your visit.

Adjacent to the Rathaus, in the street on the left looking at it from the front, is an ancient tower dating back to the period of Charlemagne (around 800), when other important city buildings were built; initially part of the Royal Palace it then became an integral part of the Town Hall and served as an archive for centuries.
