It's one of the highlights of Cologne along with the Roman Museum. The collection of artifacts is deeply diversed somehow analogical to the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam but definitely will stay with you for years in your memory. Sightseeing is not enough, to get better acquainted with you shall read all the informations carefully. Visiting time should be not less... More

Very interesting collection of artifacts showing different cultures and histories of people around the world collected by two Victorian collectors. Good use of interactive media, all in good working order, a well maintained museum and nearly everything in English and German. Audio Guide also English and german. Well worth a visit, three hours well spent.

A surprisingly interesting collection of artifacts from all over the world with good English information. Modern building with elevator, spacious rooms, well thought out displays. This museum is an unexpected delight!

A fine museum which is almost a work of art itself in its presentation. It truly broadens the mind (if the language and focus a little too overly PC) and is filled with a wonderfully varied collection of items and, I presume due to Germany's connection to the Ottoman Empire, a focus on the Near East. The floor dedicated to... More

This museum was very old-school in its content (with a huge collection of objects collected by ethnographers from various cultures), but raises the bar in its innovative and interactive display of these objects and its acknowledgement of western cultural bias and racism in the history of ethnography. A highly recommended outing for older families, students and professionals in History and... More

Note: We were confused that this museum is linked with the Cacilienkircke museum (and one ticket can cover both), but outside the building is called Museum Schutgen. The ehtnological museum is s brilliant idea, but to begin with it is not user friendly, especially if you do not read German. However, as you travel through the galleries you get the... More

This is a museum that really goes out of its way to entertain and inform the visitor. Exhibitions are clear and dramatically presented. Makes the subject appealing. Anthropology and the greats of German sciences. Impressive museum! Great!

An excellent museum of anthropology - great artifacts ... and really well presented. The theme of the exhibition is great - and challenges many stereotypes about 'what is foreign' At a time when there is much debate about the effect of migrants, this is a good place to raise the standard for understanding and tolerance. Do go and visit

I had not been to this museum before and it looked a bit stark from the outside. However, inside it is very light and the displays are very thoughtfully arranged. We enjoyed the guided tour of 1 1/2 hour.
