Very central, next to the trade fair, this huge park - the green heart of the city - is a place for everyone - offers catering, spa, nature school for young children, open-air concert events in the summer and it will be the focal place for events in 2017 when Essen is European Green Capital.

For many people Essen in the Ruhr is within the heart of Germany's industry. I have been visiting Essen for Spiel (a games convention - note games not gaming) for the past 20+ years and have spent most of my time there in the Gruga Halle at the Spiel Games Fair. Each year my wife and I have looked out... More

If you take a pick nick with you, it is a great place to enjoy summer days. Not much to eat is available as there is only one restaurant on premises, the grilling space costs extra and needs to be booked in advance. But lots of space to have a great pick nick. We go nearly twice a month only... More

This is a huge green lush park filled with all kinds of flowers and trees. It is beautifully maintained. You can explore it again and again and discover new and beautiful spots. A membership, if you live in the area, is well worth it. There are amazing meditation gardens, a waterfall, places to eat surrounding it (try the currywurst!!), an... More

Gruga park is a lovely place to stroll, look at the variety of gardens, including a large tropical green house, or just relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Grugaleuchten happens once a year when artists create illuminated installations within the park. It's extremely popular so if you fancy it, go early and allow for huge traffic jams!

It was sunny day and we had a nice relaxing trip and picnic here. You can bring your book and lunch. It is big enough to walk.
