The second largest fortress in Europe, a must-see

The fortress is very impressive. The size and extension of the walls is huge and the view from the fortress down to and beyond Koblenz spectacular.

We were on a cruise down the Rhine and chose Fortress Ehrenbreitstein as an extra trip. We took a ride over the Rhine and up to the fortress. Sometime the cable cars don't go if it's too windy but it is a neat ride. This was a really awesome fortress and I'm not a history buff like my husband. Our tour... More

If you like fortresses and spectacular views, this place is for you. The guide was dressed in 19th c. clothes and gave a very good historical presentation. Has history from Napoleon on through WWII.

It really worth going inside just only to have a great view on Rhein and Deutsch Eck! I do recommend to come after 4 or 5 when the sun is not high to take great pictures

Koblenz is a gem of a city within Southern Germany and Ehrenbreitstien is the breathtaking castle that sits high above said city. I planned a day trip to go to the castle from Bonn on the train. To get to the castle, I recommend buying the cable car package (sielbahn) to get the full experience of crossing the Rhine on... More

This UNESCO World Heritage fortress is across the Rhine from Koblenz and the most convenient way to reach it if you are a tourist is by cable car from which the fortress is a short walk. There is a small entry fee. I was part of a guided tour but it is just as easy to go on your own.... More

We took the seilbahn across the Rhine. It is then a short walk to the fortress. There are great views of the Rhine and Mosel. We went in the history museum. It is ok but nothing great,

Unfortunately, the day we had slated for Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was EXTREMELY foggy, so our views were quite impeded, and we couldn't see the fortress particularly well. It was still worth the visit, to see the history this place was steeped in, and the fog started to burn off towards the end of our visit, and we could see a hint... More

During our recent Viking River cruise, we were discouraged from taking the Marksburg Castle tour because of degree of difficulty. This was easy. Overcast day is not best time since it limits visibility. View was still good. We had fun "actor" playing a spy to entreat us to fortification. This fortress was never attacked.

The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a Fortress on the east bank of the Rhine opposite the town of Koblenz. It was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system by Prussia between 1817 and 1828 and guarded the middle Rhine region.
